Technical Services Supervisor

Pay Grade: 9 (Exempt)

Under the supervision of the Access Services Manager, oversees Technical Services functions and supervises staff involved in cataloging, processing, digitization, interlibrary loan, and serials. Provides leadership in evaluating, recommending and implementing new products/procedures relating to cataloging, resource sharing, digital collections, integrated library systems, and the discovery overlay. Helps develop strategy relating to acquisitions, collection development, and materials handling functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or candidates working toward their MLS who have relevant library and supervisory experience
  • Minimum three years relevant professional experience
  • At least two years of recent supervisory or leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with MARC original and copy cataloging and applying cataloging and archival standards such as AACR2, RDA, LCSH, and Dublin Core
  • Experience with Innovative Interfaces products, ILS workflows, and catalog discovery layers
  • Familiarity with resource sharing workflows and platforms such as WorldShare and SHAREit and protocols such as NCIP and ISO

Preferred Competencies:

  • Knowledge of user experience methodology and practice
  • Bilingual skills in English plus another language relevant to the Skokie community

Essential Functions:

  • Directly supervises members of the Technical Services workgroup, including hiring, training, managing, and coaching staff performance
  • Evaluates, establishes, and implements procedures for cataloging, materials processing, digitization, and resource sharing to effectively meet user needs and expectations
  • Oversees materials processing budget, including working with vendors and other library staff in ordering processing materials and departmental supply orders
  • Works with Web and Data Administrator to ensure the maintenance and enhancement of bibliographic data within the integrated library system and the Bibliocore overlay
  • Collaborates with departmental leadership team
  • Provides support for cataloging and processing functions and loads/removes digital product MARC records into the ILS
  • Maintains current knowledge of library and other relevant fields
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance

Other Functions:

  • Serves as Librarian in Charge as needed
  • Attends professional meetings; may serve on professional association committees
  • May serve on internal library committees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Ability to perform office-related functions including extended concentration on a computer and typing capability
  • Work may include prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, lifting/moving materials, getting down on the floor, as well as near constant computer use
  • Manual dexterity, clear speech, hearing acuity, and correctable vision needed
  • Noise level is generally moderate
  • Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.
  • Employee required to park in designated area
