Nature of Work
Under general supervision, at the full-performance level, these positions perform professional work providing a wide variety of engineering services or creative works. The performance of these duties requires the application of special knowledge of the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences. This will be applied to such services or creative works as consultation, investigation, evaluation, and planning of engineering works and systems. These positions may plan the use of land and water and/or review construction projects for the purpose of assuring compliance with plans. Public or private works or services may be in connection with any utilities, structures, buildings, machines, equipment, processes, work systems, projects and/or industrial or consumer products or equipment of a mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic or thermal nature, safeguarding life, health or property. They may specialize in a particular area of emphasis and assist on program development and technical support and may supervise clerical and paraprofessional staff. These positions perform other professional services as necessary to the planning, progress and completion of projects. The duties of these positions may require occasional field activities. Perform related work as required.

- Provide engineering designs, plans, calculations, inspections, and reports for specific projects.
- Conduct interim and final inspections of construction projects to determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations and specifications.
- Prepare and review complex plans, permits and/or contracts for projects.
- Perform data analysis to determine or establish performance standards/limits.
- Conduct interim and final inspections of and provide technical assistance to the applicable regulated community to determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and specifications.
- Write reports detailing recommendations, conclusions, and findings from inspections and reviews.
- Plot cross sections and topography, compute grade lines and earthwork, draw typical sections, and figure drainage.

- Read professional journals and trade publications to gain knowledge of new technologies; assign reading materials to staff.
- Attend state and national meetings and seminars to improve and/or share engineering knowledge.

- May assist in maintaining handbooks, manuals, databases, training materials, and training records.
