About Man the Bay
Man the Bay is an innovative fellowship that takes a bold step toward rectifying the disparity in Black male representation within the teaching profession. We are dedicated to empowering and supporting Black male pre-service teachers by providing comprehensive financial support, professional development, and mentorship opportunities. By participating in this fellowship, you will embark on a journey to make a lasting impact on the lives of students while advancing your career in education.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Service Teacher Development: Engage in a rigorous and tailored pre-service teacher training program, equipping you with the necessary skills, knowledge, and classroom strategies to excel as an educator.
Classroom Placement: Be placed in a school district classroom where your presence will contribute to the diversification of the teaching staff, benefiting both Black and non-Black students.
Mentorship: Receive ongoing mentorship and support from experienced educators who are passionate about your success and committed to helping you thrive in your teaching role.
Community Engagement: Actively participate in community engagement activities, promoting positive relationships between teachers, students, and parents within the San Francisco educational landscape.
General On-the-Job Duties
Stay Informed: Proactively seek information about the organization's various aspects.
Child Safety: Ensure vigilant supervision of children for their safety.
Positive Interaction: Interact positively and empathetically with children.
Balanced Approach: Maintain a professional yet friendly demeanor daily.
Effective Communication: Respond promptly to emails and calls within 24 hours.
Classroom Maintenance: Keep classrooms orderly and take out trash when necessary.
Task Management: Follow work plans, meet deadlines, and complete assigned projects.
Adaptability: Be open to taking on additional duties as directed by leadership staff.
Teacher Training Expectations
Required attendance during teacher professional learning events
Submit weekly lesson plans by expected deadline
Attend mentor and instructor check-in meetings
Respond to observation and feedback with a spirit of continuous improvement
Implement daily, after-school lesson plans to grade-level groups
Practice skills learned in teacher preparation coursework in class
Communicate student progress to parents and campus leadership
Plan for and execute enrichment activities during after-school
Network and collaborate with other teachers
Assist students with homework
Stay up to date with educational trends, curriculum and state or federal standards to support school initiatives and activities

Minimum Qualifications
Must have a Bachelor's Degree
Must pass a fingerprint and Department of Justice Clearance
Must pass a TB screening
Be passionate about working with children
Enthusiasm for a career in education and a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of students
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and the broader educational community
Residency or willingness to relocate
