SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
TITLE: Teacher, Regional Day School Program for the Deaf
QUALIFICATIONS: $ Bachelor or Master's degree in Deaf Education
$ Certification as a Teacher of Deaf/Hard of Hearing
per Texas Education Agency regulations
$ Ability to communicate with deaf students through sign language.
$ Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal, Regional Day School Program for the Deaf Director
JOB GOAL: To provide a comprehensive educational program including academic, speech language and listening skill in an environment that promotes emotional growth, high character, and social responsibility to Deaf/hard of hearing students from the region served by RDSPD.
RESPONSIBILITIES: To fill the responsibilities of this position, the person will:
001 Cooperate with other staff members in planning and implementing the instructional program as outlined in the IEP for his/her students.
002 Diagnose and assess student needs regarding the instruction to develop an appropriate IEP.
003 Expect and promote effective student communication through the development of speech, language, signed language and listening skills.
004 Manage and utilize amplification equipment including hearing aids and F.M. amplification systems with Deaf/hard of hearing students.
005 Utilize general curriculum and specialized curriculum to develop academic, communication and social skills in students.
006 Work with the principal and supervisory staff in identifying and solving academic and behavioral problems related to his/her students.
007 Utilize teaching techniques and classroom strategies to accommodate the various learning styles and modes of his/her students.
008 Assist in the selection of programs, equipment, and materials to meet the needs of his/her students.
009 Assist students in the development of self-help skills appropriate to the age and level of the students (may include toileting, dressing, and hygiene)
010 Supervise interpreter/aides and volunteers working in his/her classroom.
011 Perform assignments relating to planning, record keeping, reporting, and accounting of equipment and materials in a timely manner.
012 Utilize furniture, adaptive equipment, materials, and facilities in the most effective manner to support the individual instructional program.
013 Assist students in developing respect for individuals, private and public property
014 Assist students in developing social/emotional skills necessary for a successful future.
015 Integrate the teaching of social skills and high moral character into daily curriculum, teaching students to make responsible choices.
016 Demonstrate proficiency and creativity in maintaining a well-disciplined, relaxed classroom environment, including the planning and implementation of a Behavior Intervention Plan when needed.
017 Arrange, promote and support student integration into all areas of the school program, both curricular and extra-curricular
018 Provide an enriched academic environment that promotes appropriate mainstreaming.
019 Coordinate with and/or refer to community agencies as appropriate for student success.
020 Participate with other RDSPD staff for the educational benefit of all Deaf/hard of hearing students being served by the RDSPD.
021 Promote and maintain regular, positive, and effective communication and/or training with parents.
022 Attend scheduled staff development with RDSPD and school staff.
023 Demonstrate good leadership qualities with students and in professional activities.
024 Demonstrate professional attitude in performing designated responsibilities.
025 Assist in involvement of Deaf/hard of hearing children and their parents in social activities with other Deaf/hard of hearing children, their parents as well as deaf adults in the community.
026 Promote positive community relations through effective communication and involvement of community members.
027 Maintain confidentially of student information.
028 Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf and Principal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. occasionally with assistance.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months (187 days)
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
