JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:                                  Social Studies Teacher

 

DEPARTMENT:                             EDUCATION

 

JOB SUPERVISOR:                      EDUCATION DIRECTOR       

JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: To provide adolescents/children with the opportunity to participate in educational programming while in the hospital setting. Small groups and/or individual instruction will be utilized to remediate, maintain, and increase the academic and functional skills of the patients.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS includes, but are not limited to:

 

  • Read and understand psychological reports evaluation the results of intelligence and psychological assessments.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
    • Give paper and pencil tests/or utilizes testing results to assess cognitive intellectual and emotional development levels.
    • Administer criterion – referenced tests and standardized, instruments measuring the areas of reading recognition, reading comprehension, math calculation, and math reasoning.
    • Serve on Local Survey Committee (LSC) to determine the need for a comprehensive assessment according MDE Referral to Placement procedures.
    • Review all available assessment data and student records in order to make recommendations when comprehensive assessments for special education eligibilities are being considered.

 

 

  • Plan and develop curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet the individual needs of students while considering such factors as cognitive, intellectual, and emotional levels of development.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
    • Develop goals and objectives documented on an IEP/IPP for each student based on assessment data colleted and within 5 days of enrollment at Diamond Grove.
    • Prepare individual lesson plans on appropriate forms that are based on the assessment in order that individual objectives are met.
    • Serve on IEP Committee to develop goals and appropriate educational program for a child having a disability.
    • Incorporate methods of behavior modification, as needed based on accepted standards and procedures: i.e. contingency planning, token economy, rewarding, reinforcing appropriate behavior, and extinction.
    • Plan classes utilizing the subject area’s scope and sequence of skills development in order to increase understanding, knowledge, appreciation, and mastery of goals/objectives.
    • Plan classes based on teacher’s knowledge of appropriate materials that provide instructional programs that fit functioning level and learning style of each student. 

 

  • Instruct students using planned lessons and other instructional materials in academic subjects.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
    • Teach students, individually or in groups, through lectures or tutoring various academic subjects, and teaches socially acceptable behavior employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
    • Enroll patients in educational class.
    • Provide individualized/group instruction through lecture or tutoring in academic subjects on the patient’s cognitive developmental levels.
    • Employ various teaching techniques such as students learning styles, behavior modification and positive reinforcement that encourage effective teaching/learning.

 

  • Prepare documentation of program plans, patient progress notes, curriculum development and professional growth.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
    • Complete and prepare reports of teacher narratives, progress notes for acute patients, bi-weekly progress notes for residential patients, weekly lesson plans, formal IEP’s for students with an eligibility ruling to assess and develop individual program plans for students who do not have a special education ruling to assess and evaluate student’s class work in order to conduct a quality instructional program.
    • Write educational objectives based on assessments of his/her clinical needs in the treatment plan and to serve as a team member on the treatment team.
    • Serve in the discharge planning of each patient by completing necessary documentation and by writing a discharge summary.
    • Document mastered objectives on the IEP/IPP at least annually.
    • Compile an educational evaluation on each patient.    

 

  • Complete assigned Treatment Team duties.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
    • Attend team meetings as scheduled and share relevant information as well as participate in treatment planning of patients whose names are on the agenda.
    • Contribute to the development and writing of the treatment plans.
    • Interact with the patient according to treatment team decisions, and Diamond Grove program.
    • Show respect for others and interact in a professional, ethical, and cooperative manner and resolve conflicts professionally.Wears hospital ID, badge visible at all times.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
    • Performs special projects and other duties as required. 

 

    • Plan Special Projects, which may include, but are not limited to special events that are for patient enjoyment such as holiday activities.
    • Participate in Special Projects that include, but are not limited to special committees, whether they are hospital committees or departmental committees, providing expertise in areas of special training.
    • Participate in Special Projects that have been approved by the Treatment Team, utilizing job special tools that will enhance the overall aesthetic appearance of the building both inside and outside.

    • Contribute to the quality of services and to the effective and efficient functioning of the department and agency.PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
      • Complete other duties/assignments as directed.
      • Maintain effective work relationship with others.
      • Participate as a team member giving input/suggestions to solve problems and/or improve quality, effectiveness, or efficiency.Comply with policies/rules and follows established procedures.

      1. Possess comprehensive knowledge of MDE Rules/Procedures and follows.
      2. Follow guidelines set forth in IDEA.
      3. Follow guidelines of Diamond Grove Policies/Procedures. 

     

    • JOB KNOWLEDGE
      1. Demonstrate understanding of cognitive needs of patients and functional skill training.
      2. Demonstrate knowledge of special populations and characteristics of patients with special needs.
      3. Utilize knowledge of different modalities of learning styles and characteristics on Acute Care Unit and Residential Treatment Facility.
      4. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of Diamond Grove Center’s organizational policies, procedures, and practices of the education department.
      5. Demonstrate knowledge of concepts and terms of diagnostic criteria from DSM-IV in the treatment of patients.
      6. Demonstrate knowledge of MDE and IDEA guidelines.
      7. Demonstrate knowledge of treatment team guidelines and procedures as outlined in the program manual and knowledge of purpose of interdisciplinary teams and their roles in the treatment of patients.
      8. Demonstrate knowledge of educational theory and research.
      9. Demonstrate knowledge of Mandt training.

    • Maintains scheduling requirements, attendance and punctuality in accordance with hospital and department policies.
    • Follows unit assignment sheet completing assigned task designated by charge nurse.
    • Understands the need for appropriate patient/staff boundaries and maintains a strict therapeutic relationship during active treatment. Discontinues communication with patients upon discharge. Informs supervisor of any contact after discharge.
    • Seeks out sources to address ethical concerns as they relate to patient care issues.

    Qualifications
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

                                                               

    1. A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the subject area to be taught (Special Education) and possession of a valid MS “A” teaching certificate in the subject area to be taught as required by the Department of Education and agree to obtain the EmD Certification within one year from hired date.
    2. Current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification; current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

     

    Overall physical workload is medium. Must be mobile throughout the facility. Occasional operation of television and VCR. Be able to withstand noise, potential aggression, difficult to manage adolescents/children; occasional exposure to stressful situations.
