Position Summary and Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility for preparing supporting workpapers for the Company’s federal and state Franchise and Income tax returns.  Actual tax return preparation and filing is handled by a third party.
  • Supporting the following indirect tax areas as needed to ensure integration between all areas of tax across the Company:
    • Sales and Use Tax
    • Real Estate
    • Personal Property
  • Multi-state environment currently filing returns in 23 states.
  • Preparation and filing of quarterly estimated income tax payments to IRS and various state jurisdictions.
  • Ensure that annual income tax provisions are timely and accurately prepared in accordance with GAAP/ ASC 740 and other authoritative guidance related to accounting for income taxes.
  • Preparation of year-end tax LIFO calculations under the IPIC methodology (using both preliminary indexes for the audit and final indexes for the filing of the federal income tax return).
  • Represent the Company in tax audits through interaction with outside auditors.
  • Develop and maintain systems to support internal tax compliance and timely, accurate filing of returns.
  • Conduct or coordinate Federal and State research and planning activities including such areas as assessing the impact of new legislation, accounting methods or pronouncements.
  • Oversee various tax planning activities such as cost segregation studies and valuation appeals.
  • Identify and implement new tax planning opportunities such as applicable federal and state credits under direction of senior management.
  • Work in partnership with other financial and accounting roles to ensure implementation and testing of SAP, particularly surrounding support systems for fixed assets.
  • Assist Director of Tax in serving Company owners in personal tax planning matters including:
    • Quarterly estimated tax payments,
    • Annual income tax filings with IRS and state jurisdictions (if applicable),
    • Annual W-2 packages for household employees,
    • Quarterly Texas Workforce Commission filings for household employees, and
    • Other ad hoc tax projects as they arise.

Skills/Proficiencies:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective at managing, training, mentoring and developing staff.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel.
  • Highly efficient, organized, reliable and resourceful professional with practical experience and understanding of processes.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in strategic planning, execution and managing external relationships.

 

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and technical expertise of authoritative guidance for state & local, property, excise, and federal taxes in a multi-state environment.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting for income taxes under GAAP/ ASC 740.
  • Competent in utilizing standard business, tax, and accounting software applications.  
  • Requires technical tax, general accounting, and business operations knowledge.  
  • Related industry experience with distribution or consumer products industry a plus.

Relevant Experience:

  • Filing of federal and state income tax returns.
  • Coordinating state income tax compliance by developing, training, and implementing guidelines and systems.
  • Managing tax audits and supporting audit information document requests (IDRs).
  • Research, interpretation and application of ASC 740 and related guidance in support of annual financial audit.
  • Preparation of supporting tax schedules and income tax returns.
  • 5-7 years tax experience in public/private accounting.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local corporate tax matters.
