Job description

The Johnston County Tax Administration Department has an immediate opening for a Part-Time Tax Clerk.An employee in this class performs a variety of technical and administrative support functions for the Real Estate section of the Tax Administration Department. Work involves a generalized function in and supports the assessment of real estate taxes. Operation of basic office equipment including a telephone system, computer systems, along with accuracy of work, are primary prerequisites for this level of work.

Some independent judgement and initiative must be exercised within the limits of prescribed practices and processes. Reports to and work is coordinated by the Deputy Tax Administrator and is evaluated through observation, records, and reports.Performs administrative support and clerical work as needed, including but not limited to data entry and answering the telephone. Performs basic public assistance in person and via telephone.

Performs related duties as assigned.Final candidates subject to a background check (includes motor vehicle records).* Collects current and delinquents taxes; figures discounts, penalties, and interest; posts payments to computer system; prepares and issues receipts.* Processes tax payments received by mail; mails receipts and notifies taxpayer by mail or phone of discrepancies.* Balances collection with records daily.* Compares employee lists against delinquent files for garnishment purposes.* Assists lawyers, real estate agents, and others in searching tax records, maps, and other documents; makes copies.* Answers public's questions on property valuations, tax bills, and other records.* Updates cross reference files for delinquent taxes.* Performs clerical work such as typing reports, preparing and copying forms, and answering the telephone.* Prepares a variety of reports on taxes, refunds, releases, and others requested by supervisors.* Makes copies of forms, records, and other information, as requested.General knowledge of the procedures, records, and forms used in the tax collection, listing, and evaluation processes.Working knowledge of State laws and local policies regulating the tax assessment and collection functions.Ability to make arithmetical calculations and handle money accurately.Ability to type and operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer terminal, printer, and copy machine.Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments, employees, and the general public.Ability to maintain accurately records and reports.Graduation from high school and considerable work experience in data entry, handling money such as cashiering or accounting clerk, and working with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Employment Type: Part-Time
