Job description

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Sterile Processing Manager is responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, supplies and equipment, reassembly and wrapping of instrument sets, proper use of sterilizers, sonic cleaners and other related equipment and maintaining a clean safe workplace. The Manager will perform other administrative duties to include staff scheduling, orientation and assist with performance reviews when necessary. The Sterile Processing Manager will work as a team member within the entire facility and will perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Is responsible for the decontamination and processing of all surgical instrumentation, supplies, and equipment to be used for the care of the surgical patient according to policy and procedure and care standards.
  • Ability to take direction from others and follow through in a concise manner, which also promotes efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate using written, verbal, non-verbal skills when interacting with staff and physicians and ancillary departments.
  • Ability to set priorities.
  • Acts to protect and advance patient’s best interest.
  • Is responsible for on-call coverage required by department
  • Maintains current sterilization logs
  • Actively involved in QI and PI
  • Maintains knowledge of equipment, expected patient outcome, and anticipated complications.
  • Satisfactorily demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties outlined in this job description as well as continually demonstrates competency in performing the job duties.

Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Three years experience in cleaning and assembling instrument sets and working in Sterile Processing preferred.
  • Effectively reads, writes clearly, spells and able to do simple math for calculating and reporting purposes.
  • Good working knowledge of steam and gas sterilization preferred.

Required Physical Demands:

  • Strength (Lift, Carry, Push, Pull): Heavy (exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 lbs to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects)
  • Standing/Walking: Constantly; activity exists 2/3 or more of the time
  • Keyboard/Dexterity: Occasionally; activity exists up to 1/3 of the time
  • Talking (Must be able to effectively communicate verbally): Yes
  • Seeing: Yes
  • Hearing: Yes
  • Color Acuity: Yes

Environmental Conditions:

Level: High

Some exposure to hazardous risks including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment and chemicals. Hazards will be minimized if universal safety procedures are followed. Must follow standard precautions. May be required to work weekends or flex schedules.
