Hourly Wage: The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24/hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24/hour for those that hold a Bachelor's Degree.
Location: This postion is in INDOT's LaPorte District, LaPorte, IN.
Role Overview: This position will serve as an Engineering Intern for Asset Management in the Technical Services_ Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to Steve Benczik.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Assist in gathering pavement patching information in the field and preparation of patching tables
  • Assist asset team by preparing, gathering, and organizing project assessment documentation; such as mini-scopes, cost estimates, maps, project scoring, supporting data, and spreadsheets
  • Attend field checks to verify current condition, validate design plans or scope the project for bridges, roads, culverts and safety projects
  • Assist in obtaining field data for potential and active projects including photos, condition information, sizing of elements, and verification of prior assessments
  • Research and provide answers for designers, project managers and construction related to infrastructure assets
  • Attend pre-final inspections to verify construction is complete
  • Assist with Maintenance Work Plans
  • Be exposed to ArcGIS mapping, culvert hydraulics, pavement design, bridge rehabilitation, road and bridge construction and asset management on a state DOT level
  • Organize pavement data for Pavement Engineer
  • Assist asset engineer with hydraulic field surveys of small & large culverts

What You'll Need for Success:
  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or related field
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
