As an Instructor at Sylvan, your primary responsibilities are: Just Teaching. No Lesson Plans. No Preparation. As a Sylvan Instructor, you will be trained on Sylvan's proven, personal approach to learning and given the tools to teach in a small group, 3:1 setting. Our teachers have the opportunity to grow their craft with professional training in several academic areas such as Reading, Writing, Math, Study Skills, STEM, and ACT!
Requirements:
- Working towards or has obtained a Four-year degree in Education or equivalent Bachelor’s or Masters Degree.
- Knowledge of phonics and reading comprehension is preferred for reading teachers
- We ask that you are available at least 2 days per week for 2 hours and one weekend day. You can work more than this, as well.
- Current Instructional Hours:
- M-Thurs: 4:00pm-8:00PM
- Sat: 8:00AM-12:00AM
- Sun: 1:00PM-5:00PM

Essential Job Functions:
- Prepares for each instructional session; Gathers and prepares materials as appropriate
- Greets students and initiates instruction to personally engage each student
- Instructs students according to the design of the Sylvan programs
- Manages students, tasks, and time to create a balanced and robust instructional session
- Evaluates and records the progress of each student on their program assignment
- Uses praise and encouragement to ensure students are engaged and inspired to learn
- Communicates specific student needs to Center staff
- Attends periodic staff meetings and completes ongoing training as needed
- Completes certification training on each Sylvan program taught to students
This position is OnSite at Hoover High School in Des Moines. Applicants will be working with high school stdents on reading and math skills. Hours are 3:45pm to 6:00pm Monday through Friday. Days are flexible.
