Job Description

Longview Switching Company (LVSW) Switch Crew Members are responsible for the safe and efficient movement of railcars. A switch Crew Member job primarily consists of grouping railcars in a rail yard to build trains for onward movement on BNSF and UP lines and delivering railcars to and pulling railcars from local customers to facilitate their loading and unloading. LVSW customers include the Port of Longview, International Raw Materials and WestRock to name a few.

The Switch Crew Member position can mean a significant lifestyle change as the work schedule is non-traditional and requires someone to be available to work given a 2-hour notice until your seniority allows you to hold a regular job. When you are on a regular job there are 3 different shifts to select from and the rest days vary based on the respective job. This position is located in Longview, WA and does not require time spent away from home.

Compensation

During new hire training/familiarization a student trainee will earn $231.42 each day/shift worked.

Once you complete the new hire training program and become foreman qualified you may be assigned to an extra board which has guaranteed earnings of approximately $60,100 per year. Guaranteed minimum earnings progressively increase over the next five years to approximately $78,400 per year. Many foremen earn more than the guaranteed minimum due to work opportunities.

Based on needs and seniority, a foreman will be required to promote to a locomotive engineer position. A locomotive engineer working in that capacity may earn more than $83,900 per year.

* These compensation figures are solely based on the day/shift rate and do not include any additional compensation i.e. certification, overtime or arbitraries etc. and do not include any future rate increases as a result of the national agreement.

Training

Longview Switching Company conducts a comprehensive on the job training program for all student trainees. The new hire training program consists of classroom, rules and field training for approximately 5 weeks followed by additional familiarization of 12 weeks as a Helper on numerous jobs.

After one year of employment, you are eligible for dental/vision insurance to cover yourself and eligible dependents and participation in the LVSW 401(K) plan. You are subject to Railroad Retirement taxes paid at a rate equivalent to Social Security tax plus an additional 4.9%. You are also covered by Railroad Retirement benefits and, following completion of the service requirement, you will be eligible for Railroad Retirement benefits.

Union Membership

You will be required to join a union within 60 days of establishing a seniority date.

Work Environment

A conductor should expect to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. This may mean working in poor weather conditions day or night.

Employees in Train and Engine Service are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per the Federal Railroad Administration Guidelines. The Longview Switching Company Policy is ZERO TOLERANCE. We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment substance abuse testing.
