Description

The CCA YMCA is looking for Swim Team Assistant Coaches to join our team. The CCA YMCA Competitive Swim Teams are year round. Flexible scheduling and pay based on experience. 

At the Y, we are for youth and building confidence. Our competitive swimming program teaches children commitment, team work/sportsmanship, health and wellness, listening skills, goals, and so much more! Swimmers will be able to improve their skills while building friendships and developing healthy habits. The Y Seals and Sea Otter Swim Teams are open to children 6-18 years old and includes development and training for all levels from the novice swimmer (able to swim one length on their front and back) to the national level competitive swimmer.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction and supervision of the Head Swim Team Coach, the Assistant Swim Team Coach is responsible for contributing to the development of children into efficient swimmers and being actively involved with Swim Teams. The Assistant Swim Team Coach is also responsible for helping to provide a healthy and safe swimming environment for all.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Works effectively with, in conjunction with, and communicates with the Head Swim Team Coach to ensure and maintain program standards and regulations.
  2. Assistant coaches and oversees practices in conjunction with the Head Swim Team Coach, implements planned workouts and goals for each practice, and helps to lead a strength training program that is tailored to the variable skills and abilities of the swimmers. Ensures that practices have positive feedback, creativity, and fun.
  3. Attends and coaches at Dual, Invitational, Y Championship, and USA meets as directed and assigned.
  4. Attends meetings and maintains an active role in the Winter and Summer swim leagues for Dual and Championship meet participation as directed and assigned.
  5. Assists with the new swimmer evaluations process that has been established in collaboration with the Head Swim Team Coach. Ensure all children ages 6-8 years of age (able to meet criteria) are given a chance to learn.
  6. Be on deck before swimmers enter the water and throughout the entire practice.
  7. Helps to create and maintains a positive and supportive team environment where all athletes grow and develop into healthy young adults.
  8. Ensures that the pool area after practice and swim meets is left as directed and all equipment is maintained in good condition and stored properly. Perform/communicate equipment repairs regularly for safety and function.
  9. Track all necessary supplies such as medals and ribbons and any other supplies that would be needed as directed by the Head Swim Team Coach.
  10. Establishes and maintains a respectful and effective working relationship with all stakeholders to include, but not limited to, swimmers, coaches, YMCA staff and members, and the parents.
  11. Reports immediately all concerns and/or grievances presented to them by any party to the Head Swim Team Coach, Senior Program and/or Assistant Aquatic Director(s) as appropriate.
  12. Completes accurate incident reports concerning injuries, discipline, or any other event/incident involving YMCA swimmers to be turned into the Head Swim Team Coach prior to end of shift.
  13. Ensures the rules for the pool deck and Aquatics Department are followed and enforces the rules when needed.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum of 17 years of age
  2. Previous experience and knowledge of Swim Teams required
  3. Required current certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid. Oxygen certification preferred but not required.
  4. Current certification in American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches and Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving preferred but not required
  5. Preferred but not required a nationally recognized Swim Coach certification and Lifeguard Certification
  6. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  7. Strong interpersonal skills including working with diverse groups and ages of people and cultures from all social and economic segments of the community
  8. Strong time management and organizational skills
  9. Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  10. Working knowledge of modern aquatic facility procedures, practices, and equipment preferred
  11. Knowledge of current competitive swimming training techniques and the ability to teach all four strokes preferred

  • The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, swim, climb, balance, stoop, pull, push, lift, and reach and must be able to move around the work environment which may be dry or in an area with water.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more- up to the amount of a human being during emergency situations
  • Must be able to see, hear, speak, smell, and touch including vision clarity from a distance of less than 20 and up to and beyond 75' for public safety around water. Possess the ability to judge distance and space relationships and to be able to see objects where they actually are. Possess the ability to observe an area up and down and to the right and left with eyes in a fixed position (peripheral vision) due to safety of the public around water.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud due to the environment of many people in a pool area for competitive swim meets.
