Job description

Job Summary

The primary job duty of a Swim Lesson Instructor is to teach swimming techniques and water safety skills to students of all ages and ability levels. This is a safety-sensitive position exercising a high degree of discretion, trust, and confidence to properly execute duties efficiently.  Individuals in this position are responsible for ensuring a safe, but fun swimming environment for all students in their program.
 

Examples of Essential Duties

Maintains the safety of assigned participants at all times.
   
Teaches Swim Classes efficiently, spending 100% of the session time in the water for any level 4 and under.  Level 5 and up the instructor must spend majority of time in the water (demonstration, assisting students with technique) unless there is observation needed from the deck.
 
Trains swimmers according to lesson plans built for each class level.  
 
Evaluates each student throughout sessions, providing a Report Card to display progress, and make recommendation for next lesson progression according to successful completion of Town of Parker standards.
 
Provides exceptional customer service. Serves the community with courteous, tactful and respectful actions toward customers, and co-workers. Represents the Town of Parker in a positive manner while in uniform and on the clock.
Manages time and arrives at scheduled time, organizes equipment to begin classes on time and in an appropriate fashion; obtains and sets equipment up prior to class start time, puts equipment away when finished.
 Immediately reports any incidents, accidents or maintenance problems to supervisor or the MOD (Manager on Duty) and uses the proper documentation to record an incident or accident.  Assists where necessary in emergency response protocols.
 
Maintains a safe and clean work area, performing routine cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned by supervisor or Manager on Duty promptly and efficiently.
 
Responsible for each assigned or substitution shift. Will arrange substitutions for schedule a minimum of twenty-four hours in advance; will provide substitute with lesson plan and class/student progress information.
Communicates effectively and within policy when requesting substitutes.  
 
Complies with all policies regulations of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, the Town of Parker and the Health Department.
  
PERIPHERAL DUTIES: 
Attends meetings and training sessions as assigned by supervisor.
 
Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
Prepares optional lesson plans to assist in overall organization of class instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be 16 years of age or older.

Current Water Safety Instructor or similar 60 hour class preferred.

Current First Aid and current CPR Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire is required.

A combination of education and experience to provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of pool rules, regulations and other instructions, sufficient that the employee is able to enforce these guidelines in creating a safe environment for students, patrons and coworkers. 

Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive, working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. 

Necessary skill and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with a broad range of individuals; especially student and parent/guardian of student. 

Ability to learn and the skill necessary to implement proper teaching techniques in accordance with the Towns guidelines. 

Ability to demonstrate swimming and safety techniques for students to the Town standards. 

Ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action using problem-solving techniques. 

Ability to assist in the safe rescue and retrieval of an individual from the pool, or assist and individual suffering from a medical condition.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: 
Various equipment used to maintain the pool in the appropriate condition. Tools and equipment required for the safe rescue/resuscitation of individuals in an emergency.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
This job involves various degrees of physical demands, some sedentary, but others may require strenuous physical effort. All positions assigned to the Aquatics Section of the Recreation Department must be able to ensure public safety and participate in the rescue or retrieval of an individual from the pool or assist an individual suffering from a medical condition.
 
There is no position available in this section where an employee can be assured that he or she will not have to become involved in strenuous physical activity in saving an individual's life. The employee in this position may be required to:
 
 •Sit, stand, talk and hear.
 •Communicate clearly and effectively; must understand and be understood.
 •Observe activity around the pool and in the pool continuously and for extended periods of time.
 •Physically struggle, restrain or otherwise subdue/restrain individuals in a state of distress with various abilities and strength and possess the strength or quickness to rescue endangered persons.
 •Use hands, fingers, arms, legs and body, feel objects and manipulate them, operate tools and equipment effectively.
 •Use computers for word processing and data entry.
 •Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell.
 •Lift and/or move objects weighing 100 pounds or more, including the limp body of a person.
 •Meet a required level of proficiency with various testing processes used to establish standards for lifeguards and maintain a level of proficiency in such areas.
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk, occasionally required to sit, frequently use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
 
The employee is frequently required to carry, pull, push, or lift up to 50 pounds. 
 
Employee must communicate clearly and effectively; must understand and be understood. Must be able to frequently engage in ordinary or telephone conversations with speech and hearing.
 
Employee must be able to consistently see with near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision and field vision. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision.

Occasionally, the employee will be required to work outside or drive in varying temperatures and conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, hot and/or cold conditions, or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and may range from moderate to high with occasional vibrations. The employee will frequently encounter fumes, odors, dusts and mists, and occasionally encounter gasses and poor ventilation. The employee will occasionally work with mechanical or electrical hazards.

Full pay range is:  $14.56/hr.  - $19.61/hr.
This position starts at $18.00/hr. with potential to start up to $19.25/hr. based on experience!
