- Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the HRP Swim Coach position includes the following duties:
- Reports to the Pool Managers and Aquatics Coordinators
- Provide group and private swim lessons and water safety instruction to infants, children and adults following the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim curriculum and guidelines
- Responsible for the guidance, safety, and welfare of the people in their class from the time children leave their caregiver to the time they are returned to the caregiver.
- Essential Job Functions
- Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational water safety classes to the American Red Cross standard
- Serves as the main point of contact for swim lesson operations while on site at aquatics facilities; communicates with participants and guardians regarding class sessions
- Leads with onsite supervision and communication; assists with scheduling, training and evaluating swim lesson program
- Describes and accurately demonstrates new skills as they are taught
- Responsible to teach all classes in a session or have a Water Safety Instructor substitute scheduled, as required
- Attends all required pre- and in-service trainings assigned covering a variety of topics.
- Leads and maintains the promotion of excellent customer service standards at all levels of operations
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the public
- Maintains the inventory of supplies and equipment in connection with the operation of the pool; assists Recreation Supervisor and co-workers in duties necessary for the proper upkeep and maintenance of the pool and pool grounds
- Maintains all necessary documentation for business, operations, program and staffing under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor
- Teaches appropriate skills and techniques based on age and level using well-designed lesson and block plans; assists with registration; prepares and maintains records and reports
- Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A typical way to qualify is: completion of one (1) year of high school or one (1) or more years working with children.
- Licensure or Certification Requirements
- Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or the ability to obtain before employment required.
- Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen certificate, or ability to obtain before employment required
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or nationally recognized certificate, or the ability to obtain before employment preferred.
- Valid and current Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract in order to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna

- Maintain high standards of health and safety in all aquatics operations, adhering to industry standards at all times

- Provide availability and scheduling information in accordance with assigned deadlines
- Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service
- Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor

- Successfully complete all pre-requisite skills for the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course
Working Conditions:- The employee is subject to inside and outside environment conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards and atmospheric conditions.
- This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires swimming, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
Seasonal employees are eligible to participate in the Ohio Public Employment Retirement (OPERS).
