This position is eligible for hybrid (office/remote) working arrangement and flexible working hours. You can be located near anyone of HMC's California locations including, Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego or Ontario, California.

Job Summary
HMC is focused on delivering high performance architecture with integrated Sustainable Design solutions. Our Design for Good mission aims to have a positive impact on the clients and communities we serve and sustainability is an essential aspect of our work. In support of this mission, HMC is committed to having a team of people dedicated to Sustainable Design and operations in the firm. We are looking for a Sustainable Design Specialist to help advance the mission of sustainability through direct involvement on projects and design work Prek12, Higher Education, Healthcare, and Civic projects throughout all HMC offices.
The Sustainable Design Specialist will be involved in the development of HMC's Sustainable Design process & standards, project specifications, green building certifications, and act as an in-house sustainability resource. In this role you will be responsible for the coordination of Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Net Zero Energy (NZE), Living Building Challenge (LBC), and potentially other green building certifications. The Sustainable Design Specialist will be tasked with assisting project teams in documenting past and current projects' carbon, energy, and water data for reporting to the AIA 2030 Design Data Exchange (DDX). The Sustainable Design Specialist may be tasked with assisting in post occupancy evaluations (POE), carbon footprint calculations, and similar tasks to support sustainability efforts throughout the firm.
The Sustainable Design Specialist must possess the ability to work with multiple teams, monitor adherence to work plan and hours, and interact with agencies and consultants. The Sustainable Design Specialist will participate in the implementation of firm wide education, design charrettes, and mentorship of a Sustainable Design approach to high performance architecture, cultivate a culture and set goals and initiatives that will reaffirm HMC as a sustainability thought leader.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education: Minimum architectural, engineering, or environmental bachelor's degree from an accredited university or equivalent with interest in the built environment.
  • Green Building Accreditations: LEED AP with BD+C or ID+C specialty accreditation is required. WELL and/or Fitwel credential is also desirable.
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years architectural/engineering/environmental experience beyond school in a Sustainable Design related field. Experience with LEED documentation is required. Experience with education, civic, cultural, and/or healthcare projects is desirable.

Other Requirements and Responsibilities
Knowledge
  • Passion for sustainability and design excellence
  • Experience with LEED documentation in LEED BD+C and/or ID+C preferably in v4 and/or v4.1
  • Experience with WELL or Fitwel documentation
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understanding of passive and active design solutions to advance sustainability and net zero goals
  • Understanding of technical terminology in the architectural, engineering and construction industry
  • Exposure to data analysis and setting performance indicators for energy efficiency, waste reduction, emissions reduction, embodied carbon, and other sustainability goals
  • Exposure to any environmental performance software similar to Climate Consultant, Climate Studio, IES-VE, Sefaira, Covetool, EC3, Tally, OneClick, Autocase etc.
  • Familiarity with project specifications, ability to understand architectural, mechanical, electrical, and structural drawings
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE, ICC, CALGreen, and California Energy Code
  • Knowledge of Life Cycle Analysis, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, and Post Occupancy Evaluation tools

Design Coordination
  • Research best design and sustainability practices, case studies, high-performance building technologies, codes, and regulations
  • Organize, take part in, and potentially lead design charrettes and sustainability goal-setting sessions
  • Work with project team to maintain project sustainability goals, track certification goals, and coordinate certification documentation
  • Assist in the delivery of sustainability presentations both internally and externally
  • Manage and collaborate on HMC's firmwide Sustainable Design initiatives and supports the Sustainable Design team in activities such as AIA 2030 data collection and reporting
  • Support Sustainable Design education program, assist and execute Sustainable Design analysis training sessions for design staff

Research
  • Contribute to and support firmwide research activities related to Sustainable Design

Communication and Collaboration
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong attention to detail
  • Establish productive working relationships, and deal effectively and cooperatively with team members, consultants, and government agencies
  • Strong problem solving and analysis skills
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Must be self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to seek help as needed
  • Coordinate project details with internal and external team members, resolving conflicts and discrepancies where needed
  • Attend professional activities outside of office

Supervision and Delegation
  • Ability to professionally communicate both verbally and in writing to give assignments to office support staff, consultants, and vendors
  • Ability to delegate assignments to support staff
  • Support Sustainability Director in supervision and delegation of work

Documentation
  • Ability to correspond effectively with consultants and project managers for project files and minor directives
  • Ability to write meeting minutes, prepare analyses, calculations, and professional correspondence
  • Prepare, manage, and coordinate documentation on LEED and other third-party rating systems

Management
  • Able to differentiate between conflicting priorities and issues to identify underlying causes and advance without delay
  • Demonstrate motivation in seeking new responsibilities and challenges
  • Set goals, prioritize, and plan work activities for self-management and use time efficiently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and assess priorities effectively
  • Estimate hours for assigned tasks and finish tasks within agreed upon budget hours for the task
  • Prepare plans of action for resolving project related problems

The salary range for this position is $72,118 to $104,776
The actual offered salary for this position will vary depending on multiple factors including the candidate's qualification, education, position knowledge, work experience, skills, ability, work location, and internal incumbent compensation for similar roles. We do not anticipate individuals hired into this position will start at or near the top half of the range listed; the decision will be based on each individual case. The salary range listed above does not include other compensation elements such as discretionary bonus opportunities, employee stock ownership grants, paid time off, medical insurance, and other wage and benefit opportunities.
