Sustainability Service Corps (SSC) is a bridge-to-career AmeriCorps Fellowship program that delivers professional development to emerging climate protection leaders who implement projects related to sustainability, education, and community engagement for municipalities, nonprofits, schools, and disadvantaged communities across California.

Program Benefits

AmeriCorps Requirements

  • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
  • Ability to pass FBI, CA Department of Justice, out-of-state (if applicable), and National Sex Offender Public Registry background checks prior to service

*Currently, we are unable to accept applicants with student visas (such as F1 or F2 student visas, J1 or J2 exchange visitor visas, G series visas, etc.) or those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Sustainability Service Corps Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
  • Adhere to COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements determined by host organization
  • Live in the state of California
  • Commitment to the full term of service (900 hours - 6 months)
  • Capability to work in a professional office or field setting
  • Strong verbal and written communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for community-oriented climate change solutions and interest in launching a career in sustainability
  • Experience with, or training in, climate science, sustainability, environmental justice, education, community outreach, and project management
  • Past service experience (e.g., volunteering, community service, etc.)
  • Associates degree or above AND/OR relevant experience
  • Being local to the community where you will serve

Transportation Equity and Safe Routes to School FellowSAN MATEO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION

At SMCOE, the Fellow will support equity-priority schools and communities across San Mateo County. This initiative seeks to equip community members with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the built environment as pedestrians or bicyclists, and make the connection between transportation choices, human impact on the environment, air quality, and individual and community health.

Description of duties

  • Coordinate and lead Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs in identified equity priority schools and communities
  • Coordinate projects as assigned that result in increased participation in active transportation for San Mateo County students and seniors
  • Document and track SRTS meetings, activities updates, and events
  • Develop materials, presentations and outreach/engagement materials
  • Identify potential funding or encouragement opportunities to make walking and bicycling to School safer, easier, and more equitable
  • Coordinate services and events at schools for walk/roll to School encouragement days

Desired Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: 4-year college degree; Experience working with children and/or adolescents in an educational setting; Experience working in a community-based setting
  • Knowledge of community outreach and ability to work collaboratively across multiple sectors and community partners
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with others from differing racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds
  • Social media, marketing, design (Canva) is a plus
  • Technical and creative writing skills (reports, correspondence, and marketing and promotional materials)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (presentations, facilitation, and collaboration)
  • Project management. Ability to coordinate between events between vendors, schools, and community based organizations; Ability to work collaboratively across multiple sectors and community partners; History of self-management and the willingness and ability to take initiative, but can also follow directions; work effectively on a team; Learns quickly and is not afraid to ask questions;
  • Passionate about pedestrian and bicycle related topics and issues
  • Enjoys and is effective at conducting research and synthesizing data
  • Is comfortable using Excel to perform basic-to-medium level calculations and analysis
  • Spanish language skills (desired but not required)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Fellow will be asked to work in-person 80% (4 days a week) and 20% remote with the possibility of working in person 5 days a week as needed.

LOCATION

San Mateo County Office of Education (Redwood City, CA)

Fellow experience

The Fellow will have one Site Supervisor who will meet with them 1:1 on a weekly basis, as well as informal check-ins. The Fellow will work closely with the regional county office of education, and will have the opportunity to work closely with numerous community-based organizations (CBOs). SMCOE offers professional development training, a great work atmosphere, hands-on learning, and the opportunity to create long-term and sustainable change through collaboration between SMCOE, local governments, CBOs, and local businesses. The fellow will receive mentorship to assist them during the Fellowship and for life post-Fellowship. They will be given the opportunity to attend workshops and conferences as participants and presenters and be guided through this process. This role offers the opportunity to capitalize on the numerous partnerships in place, and cultivate meaningful relationships that can go beyond the duration of the Fellowship.
