Job description

Description

Beyer Blinder Belle has reaffirmed its commitment to an environmentally and socially responsible practice by recently publishing our three-year Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) and continuing participation in the AIA 2030 Challenge. We are now seeking to hire a Director of Sustainability who will be responsible, in collaboration with the firm leadership, for leading all aspects of BBB's sustainability strategy.

Our ideal candidate is excited about impacting BBB's delivery of sustainability-related services to clients, elevating BBB's fluency, and growing internal capabilities in sustainable design. This individual will be critical in helping BBB build sustainability performance criteria into our business and project processes to measure, manage, and improve over time.

This position may be a hybrid role in which a portion of the candidate's time will be spent leading firm sustainability efforts and engaging in architectural and planning projects, depending on the candidate's qualifications and capacity.

In addition to working locally with a broad and diverse group of professionals at all stages of career development, new hires will collaborate virtually with BBB design professionals across our different office locations. All BBB employees, including new hires, can participate in staff initiatives that advance professional skills, connect staff outside the realm of project work, and promote environmental and social well-being values.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and be a resource across multiple studios on projects.
  • Alongside design teams, advocate for sustainable design on all our projects by guiding clients through strategic assessment, including implementation of third-party green building and sustainable design certifications. Facilitate sustainable design workshops and stakeholder engagement.
  • Act as an external ambassador for BBB through interactions with BBB's clients, community stakeholders, and industry associations (AIA COTE, USGBC, etc.) on sustainability issues. Contribute to business development and project pursuits through thought leadership and crafting of sustainability project scope and proposal narratives.
  • Manage firm's internal Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) implementation, tracking, and annual reporting and recasting in collaboration with established sustainability leadership group and firm partners.
  • Be familiar with and directly use basic and detailed sustainability analysis tools, such as energy modeling, daylight modeling, embodied carbon, and whole building lifecycle analysis (WBLCA) programs.
  • Be familiar with and engaged in the community on emerging and evolving third-party green building standards, certifications, and codes; maintain relationships with industry groups and programs.
  • Lead cost/benefit analyses and manage team to deliver life cycle cost and return on investment analyses appropriate to each phase of project design.
  • Research, evaluate, and report on new sustainable building systems, materials, products, and technologies coming to market.
  • Assess studio capabilities and conduct in-house sustainability training programs; work with the Director of Design & Construction Technology to assess and train on software.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • 7-10+ years of relevant industry or consulting experience in sustainable design, construction, or a relevant field.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or related field.
  • Accreditations in recognized sustainability programs with a clear demonstration of leadership.
  • Broad understanding of sustainable design, resiliency, biophilia/biomimicry, DEI, and wellness concepts.
  • Knowledge of and experience in guiding clients and design teams through third-party certifications, including but not limited to LEED, Passive House, Living Building Challenge, WELL, and Fitwell.
  • An excellent understanding of the green building and ESG sector with strong existing networks of key clients and decision-makers.
  • Experience driving change programs in organizations is a plus.

This is a full-time position with excellent benefits.  Salary is commensurate with experience and ability, ranging between $110,000 and $140,000 annually, excluding bonuses and other benefits. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting a resume, cover letter, and portfolio. This position can be based out of any of our New York, Boston, or Washington, DC offices.

As an equal-opportunity employer, Beyer Blinder Belle is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce.
