Survey Rod/Instrument Operator

Learn. Grow. Lead.

This opportunity is for a Rod/Instrument Operator with 0 to 5 years of experience in the field of surveying. This candidate would be put in a position to be mentored by an experienced Survey Crew Chief and Professional Surveyor. This candidate would work alongside an experienced crew chief and work independently as skills improve. The ideal candidate has strong verbal skills, attention to detail, willingness to learn new tasks and technologies, and willingness to work in outdoor elements.

Compass Infrastructure Group offers civil engineering design and project management services, specializing in bridge and highway design, safety studies, inspections, constructability, and other transportation related services. Compass has been selected as prime consultant for projects with the Ohio DOT, the Ohio Turnpike, Counties, and Cities. We are also engaged in sub-consulting roles on projects for ODOT, Ohio Turnpike, City of Columbus, and Oil & Gas Clients. As a result of this success, we have worked on over 80 transportation projects in three years and have developed a steady backlog of diverse and exciting transportation projects.

Job Description:

You will serve as a technical resource in the firm’s survey practice, performing field survey and coordinating closely with multiple disciplines within Compass, while being mentored and assisting in field survey practices from an experienced Survey Crew Chief.

Job Description:

· Layout grids, horizontal and vertical project control and notes, remove debris and vegetation as necessary

· Efficiently learn and operate a variety of survey instruments and hand tools as necessary

· Read and interpret survey records, legal descriptions, various construction/right of way plans, and plats

· Prepare legible & accurate field notes and upload/download data including files, photos, and documents

· Utilize Trimble Business Center, GPS, Total Station and other survey instruments

· Boundary and monument recovery

· Topographic survey data collection

· Set up, maintain, and operate survey equipment, vehicles, and supplies

· Perform all work in a responsible manner, follow a Health & Safety Plan, safely maneuver a project site

· Be a positive representative of the company and its core values

What You Bring:

· High School Graduate

· Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record. Must have satisfactory drug and background test.

· 0 to 5 years of experience preferred

· Willingness to learn new skills and technologies with survey equipment

· Planning and recording detailed field notes

· Operation of survey vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner

· Must be willing to work in all weather conditions as most projects will be in the outdoor environment.

· Have the ability to perform standing, stooping, dragging, lifting and walking for extended periods of time.

· Ability to communicate effectively with property owner, coworkers, clients, and utility providers

· Must be willing to work in a team environment and independently with varying supervision

· Ability to work overtime and travel as needed

· Must have or be willing to obtain OSHA 10 Hour Construction Safety Certification
