POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Operates various surveying equipment including but not limited to Total Stations, Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, Electronic Data Collectors, handheld calculators, automatic Levels, prism poles, tripods, tribrachs, level rods, survey chains, measuring tapes, machetes, axes, shovels, and utility locators.

 

Assists in overseeing field crew operations and performs as crew chief in his/her absence by planning daily crew activities, identifying problems, and determining solutions related to surveying. Collects technical survey data utilizing the Electronic Field Book data collection software. Conducts surveying safety setups. Performs survey calculations for all phases of location surveys.

 

Performs technical survey assignments for all phases of location surveys. Assists in the recovery of project control data and the selection of traverse points in recording field survey data.

Assists the SURVEY CREW in the maintenance of all surveying equipment. This includes adjusting and cleaning tribrachs, tripods, level rods, prism poles, survey chains, measuring tapes, utility locators, sharpening machetes, axes, shovels, and chain saw blades. This also includes cleaning SURVEY CREW vehicles, boats, and 4x4 utility vehicles.

 

Assists in performing survey computations for the SURVEY CREW using handheld calculators in support of the crew’s daily routine.

 

Operates and maintains surveying vehicle; keeping vehicle equipped with surveying supplies and surveying equipment on a daily basis.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of advanced mathematical principles.
  • Knowledge of land surveying concepts, principles, and terminology.
  • Skill in using copying equipment.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using survey equipment for field surveys.
  • Ability to perform basic field calculations.
  • Ability to analyze deeds and maps.
  • Ability to learn to use software applicable to the Departments Surveying & Mapping mission, possesses strong learning skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports, records, files, correspondence, and legible handwritten notes.
  •  Ability to follow Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to varying workloads and assignments.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment performing complex and at times strenuous tasks.
  • Ability to understand and interpret plans, specifications, design standards, and manuals.
  • Ability to interpret state and federal policies and procedures.

This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or its equivalent.  Two years’ experience in field surveying.
