Survey Crew Chief

Job Title: Crew Chief

Summary/Objective:

GeoPoint Surveying, Inc. is a land surveying firm with multiple locations, specializing in land development, remote sensing, energy, geospatial mapping, commercial surveys, and subsurface utility engineering.

A typical Survey Crew consists of a Crew Chief, an Instrument Man (I-Man) and one or two Rodmen. The Crew Chief position includes all the duties and responsibilities of the Rodman and the Instrument Man, along with the following:

Essential Job Functions:

• Operate all equipment, including but not limited to, total stations, GPS receivers, data collectors, and automatic levels
• Direct other field personnel
• Clear line using a machete
• Locate boundary corners using a magnetic location device
• Properly enter data in the form of coordinates, angles, distances, offsets, auto linework, azimuths, bearings, and field codes
• Ensure truck is fully equipped daily and interact with clients and neighbors in a polite and respective manner
• Researching and gathering of information
• Responsibility for the assigned vehicle and all the equipment that is checked out to the crew
• Responsibility for scheduling routine maintenance on the vehicle and reporting any mechanical problems to the Mechanic in a timely manner
• Responsibility for reporting any problems with the survey equipment
• Responsibility for acquiring the work assignments for the day and all information necessary to complete the work
• Responsibility for survey note keeping
• Responsibility for each member of the crew, including overseeing job performance, conduct, work habits and providing training
• Responsibility for the safety of the crew, including proper attire, ensuring that safety cones, signs, and vests are used when necessary
• Responsibility for accurately recording and turning in the daily time sheet for the crew
• Responsibility for recommending crew members for promotions, disciplinary action, and/or dismissal
• Make in field decisions on boundaries, topographic surveys, and identify various tree types
• NOTE: The Crew Chief must be able to perform the above tasks, as well as those contained in the Rodman Person job description and the Instrument Person job description

• Work requires using a machete, shovel and sledgehammer or other appropriate tools
• Lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. over rough terrain may be required
• Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various pieces of field equipment
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms, speak, and hear
• The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell
• Able to get in and out of vehicle multiple times a day
• Drive 30 to 200 miles daily
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

Work Environment:

• It is required to work outside in all types of weather conditions, possibly for extended periods of time
• The terrain may be rough, steep, wet, or swampy. Vegetation may be dense, and insects, snakes or animals may be encountered
• Desk/Workstation may be located in a confined area
• Moderate noise indoors/outdoors (i.e., computers, phones, printers, and traffic)
• Able to work overtime and some weekends
• Able to work well in a team environment as well as being self-motivated and driven
