This position is located within the Critical Care Service at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System in Tucson, AZ.Qualifications: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service that has provided the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience functioning as the primary scrub person or providing assistance to a surgical team during/for surgical procedures in at least half of the following specialties: Orthopedics (totals), Vascular (Open and Endo), Ophthalmology, Urology, Gynecology, General, Robotics, Neuro, Oculoplastics, and/or Cardio-Thoracic. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. Simply stating that you are/were a Surgical Technician is not qualifying - experience must be documented.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that included courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc.

COMBINATION: Anequivalent combination of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience as described above which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: Completion of a surgical technologist program.

Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods ofregular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon.
