Duties:
Job Summary:
The Surgical Assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The Surgical Assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate safe patient care. The Surgical Assistant performs these duties under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policies and appropriate laws and regulations. Employee will act in the Surgical Technologist role when not needed in the Surgical Assistant role.
Job Expectations:
- Confirms special equipment/implants, etc. needed for procedure is available and ready
- Reviews surgical consent and case schedule to confirm procedure and special needs
- Assist in moving and position of patient
- Place pneumatic tourniquet
- Maintain integrity of sterile field
- Drape patient per surgeon's preferences
- Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization
- Assist in maintaining hemostasis (direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties, suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents or other measures as directed by the surgeon)
- Use electrocautery (mono and bi-polar)
- Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon's directive
- Close wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) per surgeon's directive
- Insert drainage tubes per surgeon's directive
- Select and apply wound dressings
- Assist with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events while in the Operating Room
- Other duties or procedures as deemed necessary and as directed by the surgeon

Education:

Required: Education
- Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technology program
Experience:
- 3 years Surgical Tech experience
License/Certification/Registration:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Preferred:
Education: Experience
- 5 years Surgical Tech experience
Certifications & Licenses:
- BLS
