Job Description Summary
This position is for a coordinator to support the Earth Action Ecological Conservation Applications Area in the Earth Science Division at NASA Headquarters. This position supports the development of data and applications of Earth observations to advance biodiversity and wildlife management, conservation, and science.
The Support Scientist will support NASA's Earth Action Program in carrying out tasks related to program management of the Ecological Conservation Applications Area (EC). The Support Scientist will support oversight, coordination, management, planning, monitoring, and execution for EC's program elements. This individual will organize and coordinate activities within EC, ESD, and SMD to enable the use of NASA data and Earth observations by conservation organizations and end users. They will attend national and international conferences and meetings and participate in SMD, ESD, interagency, and international coordination activities as needed.
The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in Applied Ecology, Wildlife Management, and Wildlife Conservation and will have advanced scientific/technical writing and communication skills. Candidates with demonstrated experience in relationship building with conservation organizations in the U.S. government, state governments, tribal organizations, and non-profits will be viewed favorably.
Role/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate for this position will be expected to:
  • Support innovation, community engagement, and user-generated activities and content on Earth science applications to solve issues in Ecological Conservation, ecosystems management, social-ecological systems, and other themes,
  • assess, ideate, develop, and manage outreach and engagement activities that support the development and use of NASA data for Ecological Conservation, and
  • liaise with U.S., state, and tribal government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and for-profit companies to identify Earth observation data and capacity needs and work closely with the Capacity Building Program, Earth Science Data Systems, and other ESD programs.
  • Engage communities, professional societies, government agencies, and organizations on collaborations to enable applications, innovation, and community-based approaches and solutions to Earth science applications for decision-support.
  • Assess opportunities, build relationships, recommend plans, and execute and manage activities for potential collaborations.
  • Participate, arrange, and lead meetings, workshops, and events to support innovation and community engagement in Earth science applications for Ecological Conservation and management.
  • Identify and connect with potential partners outside of NASA who can collaborate in the development and execution of NASA Earth observations applications for Ecological Conservation.
  • Serve as a key expert on topics related to wildlife conservation and management in internal and interagency working groups, committees, and initiatives.
  • Develop, execute, and assess the impact of outreach and engagement activity strategy for EC.
  • Serve as a mentor to NASA interns.
  • Actively engage in the Applied Earth Observations Innovation Partnership (AEOIP).
  • Assist Program Applications Leads (PALs) in carrying out mission-specific duties.
  • Represent the interests of NASA, Earth Science Division, Earth Action Program, and Ecological Conservation Applications Area at community engagement, public, scientific, educational, and interagency events.

Requirements
Requirements:
  • Doctorate degree in environmental, ecology, or Earth science, with 4 or more years of postgraduate research
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in conservation science, applications, and policy
  • 1 or more years in assisting with the implementation of NASA Earth Actionprogram elements
  • Demonstrated experience in interagency and interorganizational collaboration
  • Demonstrated ability to productively combine independent work, coordination and collaboration, and teamwork
  • Excellent communication skills (Written/Oral/Listening/Presentation) with scientific, administrative/executive, and public audiences
  • Demonstrated expertise in topics of Earth science or remote sensing and fisheries and wildlife management

Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience serving on U.S. interagency and presidential working groups, committees, and initiatives
  • Extensive familiarity with NASA projects and processes
  • Experience with U.S. government processes, procedures, and policy
  • At least 3 years experience in data science or computational science with demonstrated experience in generating and leveraging data-driven insights for program or project management
  • At least 10 years of relevant scientific research, preferably in applied ecology, conservation, or environmental science
