Duties
As a Supervisory Hydrologist within the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center some of your specific duties will include:
  • Provides consultation and scientific advice to the Center Director, works in partnership with the Center's Surface Water, Groundwater, and Water-Quality Specialists, and aids other OKI WSC scientists on studies and research in the field of hydrologic, water quality, or biologic systems, especially on matters pertaining to their own discipline expertise and knowledge
  • Supervises the performance and reviews scientific products of 8-12 full-time staff, who conduct and analyze data of hydrologic, water quality, and/or biologic investigations. Recommends promotions, reassignments, and awards. Counsels employees on project, administrative, career development, and workplace topics
  • Determines hydrologic and/or biologic data needs within the OKI WSC and defines potential water problems; develops proposals for studies to meet identified needs
  • Serves as an USGS point of contact in OKI and as such initiates, responds to, and coordinates periodic contacts with the USGS Water Mission Area, other Water Science Centers, and other Federal, State, and local agencies on behalf of the OKI WSC.
  • Personally conducts or contributes to complex hydrologic and/or biologic investigations, presents findings at conferences and meetings, and publishes results in USGS publications and in professional journals

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • Supervisory Probationary Period - This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.
  • Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
