Job description

Reports to the Director/Manager. Coordinates the daily operational activities of the Pharmacy Technicians by assigning job duties, training, scheduling, evaluating performance, and monitoring workflow and workload for all shifts. Ensures the appropriate medication delivery to nursing units. Facilitates departmental and hospital initiatives to meet or exceed regulatory agency requirements.MISSION, VALUES and SERVICE GOALS

RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates the daily work activities and performance of the Pharmacy Technicians in accordance with established policies and procedures by:

  • Monitoring workflow and assigning job duties to ensure the appropriate use of Pharmacy Technicians per hospital and department policy, union bargaining agreement and Indiana State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Maintaining the Pharmacy Technician work schedule and arranging staffing coverage for absences according to policy.
  • Planning and coordinating ongoing training for assigned associates. Also, ensuring a comprehensive orientation and training for new associates.
  • Assisting with recruiting, hiring, evaluating, coaching and, if necessary, disciplining assigned staff.
  • Evaluating the quality and quantity of the work performed by the Pharmacy Technicians; also preparing and conducting performance reviews for assigned staff. Documenting specific examples related to employee performance throughout review period.
  • Taking immediate action in accordance with departmental or hospital policy when necessary and appropriate. Notifying
    Director/Assistant Director of operational and personnel issues that arise.
  • Ensuring communication and appropriate follow-through between Pharmacy Technician shifts within the Pharmacy and between the Pharmacists and the Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Planning and conducting regular meetings with the Pharmacy Technicians to relay pertinent information.
  • Assisting the Director/Assistant Director in relaying information from the pharmacy to nursing, physicians, clinical pharmacy services, decentralized pharmacy services and any other applicable areas of the hospital.
  • Serving as a resource to facilitate a smooth work flow by reviewing, interpreting, and administering department policies and procedures and communicating any pertinent information to the appropriate parties.
  • Interpreting, enforcing and supporting hospital policies, procedures, protocols and the terms and conditions of the Union bargaining agreement.
  • Demonstrating an effective leadership style which supports collaboration, shared communication, innovation and a continuous focus on Beacon Health System's mission and the department’s goals/objectives.
  • Supporting teamwork through such things as the availability of timely and necessary information, required resources and training, tangible and intangible support and timely feedback.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
  • Initiating and/or coordinating special projects as assigned by pharmacy management.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and successful completion of a pharmacy technician training program approved by the State of Indiana. Current pharmacy technician license through the State of Indiana Pharmacy Board is required. Certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred. A minimum of two years of hospital pharmacy technician experience is required.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires hospital knowledge of unit dose and injectable medications and the set-up and maintenance of Pyxis equipment.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills (i.e., word processing and e-mail applications) and a general knowledge of hospital computer systems.
  • Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to elicit cooperation and support from others and to interact effectively with subordinates, management, and other hospital associates.
  • Demonstrates the organizational skills necessary to plan and coordinate work assignments for Pharmacy Technicians.

Working Conditions
