How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:
TheSupervisor, Fleet Service Engine/Transmission is responsible for troubleshoots and analyzes failures; researches state-of-the-art maintenance practices; provides support and technical assistance to the service garages and Overhaul Base; and partners with vendors and bus maintenance employees to resolve fleet maintenance issues.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $37.78/hr. or $78,582/yr. to $42.88/hr. or $89,190yr.
Full Salary Range: $37.78/hr. or $78,582/yr. to $61.32/hr. or $127,546/yr.
What you would do in this job
Supervisor, Fleet Service Engine/Transmission
  • Ensures that the most effective, efficient and advanced methods are used in the maintenance and repair of engines and transmissions
  • Develops and documents procedures and designs job aids, which can be used by mechanics. Ensures that these are communicated effectively to appropriate Bus Maintenance employees.
  • Provides on the job training and diagnostic assistance, when needed. Assists with troubleshooting issues using advanced diagnostic equipment including laptop computers and manufacturer specific software.
  • Explains thoroughly and effectively the functionality of all power train systems in a manner that is easily understood by mechanic technicians of all skill levels.
  • Prepares oil/fuel samples as necessary for analysis. Monitors oil/fuel/coolant analysis reports. Analyzes these reports for problems and/or trends that negatively impact Metro Transit's equipment.
  • Analyzes chronic mechanical problems and trends and works with vendors and maintenance employees to develop long term solutions. Analyzes road call failures and MPG data. Develops procedures to improve road call mileage and fleet MPG.
  • Periodically monitors the work being performed at all facilities to ensure proper procedures are being used.
  • Learns and provides training in disciplines outside the position focus areas.
  • Performs Supervisor, Service Garage duties in their absence (see Supervisor, Service Garage job description for list of duties).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisor of HVAC/Electrical

  • Develops and documents procedures and design job aids which can be used by Bus Maintenance staff
  • Provides on the job training and diagnostic assistance when needed.
  • Assist with trouble shooting issues using advanced diagnostic equipment including laptop computers and manufacturer-specific software.
  • Thoroughly and effectively explains HVAC and electrical systems in a manner that is easily understood by mechanic technicians of all skill levels.
  • Ensures that Bus Maintenance is in compliance with applicable EPA regulations related to refrigerants.
  • Analyzes chronic mechanical problems and failure trends and works with vendors and maintenance employees to develop long term solutions.
  • Periodically monitors the work being performed at all facilities to ensure proper procedures are being used.
  • Learns and provides training in disciplines outside the position focus areas.
  • Acts as service garage supervisor during the absence of regular supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
Minimum Qualifications:
Any of the following combinations of experience in automotive maintenance, heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, or closely related field and completed education in Diesel Mechanics, Automotive Service Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician, or closely related field WITH at least one (1) year of supervisory and/or proven leadership experience:
  • High school diploma/GED with eight (8) years of experience including one (1) year of supervisory and/or proven leadership experience.
  • Associate's degree with six (6) years of experience, including one (1) years of supervisory and/or proven leadership experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher with four (4) years of experience, including one (1) years of supervisory and/or proven leadership experience.
What are the knowledge, skills and abilities for the job:
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines, automatic transmissions control systems, HVAC, hydraulics and DC electricity.
  • Basic knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems; principles of analog and digital electronics, electronic control circuitry and associated mechanical, HVAC, pneumatic, hydraulic systems, testing and inspections methods/tools; and welding.
  • Ability to analyze malfunctions in electrical/electronic, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment; determine repair; and perform electronic fabrication and assembly tasks.
  • Skilled in written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem analysis and resolution skills.
  • Ability to understand and interpret the Metro Transit union contract.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and other windows-based environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules; operating and maintenance instructions; and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before groups of subordinates or co-workers.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; compute rate, ratio and percent; and draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Tact, courtesy and cooperation in dealings with others where the primary purpose is the exchange of information.
  • Demonstrated good work record.
  • Ability to provide effective one-on-one training and troubleshooting assistance to Bus Maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to work varying schedules to train and monitor workmanship on all shifts at all facilities as needed and assigned. Must be able to work second and third shifts for extended periods.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work productively with minimal supervision.

  • Experience writing technical procedures, service bulletins and other written business communication.
  • Experience working with a union contract.
  • Experience leading training in both a classroom and shop setting using all forms of training presentation and media.

What your work environment would be: Work is frequently performed in a normal office environment, but may require occasional outdoor work with exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work requires occasional local in-state travel by car to visit different facilities. May occasionally travel by air for out-of-state for training and conferences. Work is frequently performed near moving parts or equipment; in wet, humid conditions; and occasionally in high, precarious places. Position is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and occasionally to toxic or caustic chemicals. There is occasional exposure to vibrations and the risk of electrical shock. Position is regularly exposed to loud noise.
What are the physical requirements: Position is regularly required to speak, hear, read and write; frequently to smell; and has vision requirements (close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors, and ability to adjust focus). Must have strength and manual dexterity to occasionally handle mechanical tools and equipment occasionally. Must be able to regularly lift/carry/push/pull up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Position is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and turn, twist or bend at waist.
