Position Location: Medical-Legal Partnership Program (statewide)

Position Summary: A Nonprofit Law Firm seeks a full-time Supervising Attorney to support the development, design, and implementation of our statewide Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Program which works with health professionals from a variety of clinics, hospitals, and health system settings to improve health, reduce poverty, eliminate health disparities, and enhance health equity by integrating access to “legal remedies” into team-based efforts to address social drivers of health.
Job Description: The Supervising Attorney of our MLP Program will:
  • Collaborate with the MLP Managing Attorney and Project Director and other leaders in A Nonprofit Law Firm to identify opportunities for “impact work” and to align our resources and to enhance our capacity to address the highest priority legal needs of our clients and local communities;
  • Promote and enhance the roles of legal advocates in collaborative, community-based efforts to ameliorate poverty, improve health, and promote equity.
  • Build and support strategic relationships with medical, public health, social work, and other professionals from clinics, hospitals, health systems, and health payers who provide care to low-income North Carolinians.
  • Help to develop and implement a Continuous Quality Improvement (“CQI”) plan that will help us to monitor, track and report data related to MLP activities, identify service gaps, improve our workflows and internal processes to improve outcomes and enhance the impact of our MLP work.
  • Work collaboratively with our MLP partners to improve outcomes, measure impact and outcomes, identify operational challenges and seek solutions, and secure resources to ensure the sustainability of our MLP work.
  • Provide high-quality training and provide other capacity-building support for health professionals and community partners that serve patients/clients who may benefit from referrals to legal assistance.
  • Ensure that screening and intake for MLP applicants is conducted effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with A Nonprofit Law Firm's protocols and statewide case acceptance priorities.
  • Create clear, concise, and accurate information about legal matters/rights for dissemination to patients, clients, and caregivers who are served by our MLP partners.
  • Assist with fundraising, grant-writing, reporting, grant administration, and ensuring compliance with all applicable LANC policies and grant requirements.
  • Assist with efforts to recruit, hire, retain, and evaluate staff who are involved in MLP work.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and direct supervision of MLP advocates' programmatic responsibilities.
  • Assist with efforts to recruit and supervise MLP interns and externs; and
  • Serve as the Computer Resource Person (“CRP”) to assist statewide MLP staff and as the program's liaison/collaborator with our IT staff.

Qualifications: Candidates applying for this position should have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, health professionals and community partners from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and professionally as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent research, writing, advocacy, analytic, and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail and accuracy, ability to set and communicate priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Professionalism, diplomacy, and sound judgment.
  • A juris doctorate and a license to practice law in the State of North Carolina; and
  • No pending North Carolina State Bar disciplinary proceedings and be in good standing with all Bars to which they are licensed.

A graduate degree and work experience in social work, public health, public policy, human services, or related fields is strongly preferred. Spanish language skills preferred but not required.
