Summer Programs - Teaching Intern

The Teaching Intern Program at Choate Summer Programs provides current college students and recent college graduates with a rewarding opportunity to teach in an intellectually stimulating and supportive academic community. Interns have ample opportunity to teach, coach, develop lesson plans, and evaluate student performance, and in turn receive feedback on their teaching from mentor teachers, department heads, and the Coordinator of the Teaching Internship Program.

The internship program is particularly beneficial to those applicants who are interested in teaching in a residential college-preparatory or middle school institution. Approximately 20-24 Teaching Intern positions are offered each summer in Arts (Acting, Digital Media, Visual Art), English, HPRSS (History, Philosophy, Religion, Social Science), Languages (French, Italian, Latin, Spanish), Mathematics, Computer Science, Robotics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics), as well as in our Signature Programs and Workshops. The Internship includes stipend, room & board, and runs from Tuesday, June 18 to Saturday, July 27, 2024.

Our immersive internship program provides a comprehensive experience in which interns:

• Live in a student dormitory and share advising and supervisory responsibilities with other interns and a veteran house adviser
• Work with one or two mentor teachers
• Help prepare activities, assignments, quizzes, projects, and other aspects of each assigned course
• Teach at least two full periods in each assigned course
• Provide classroom coverage in assigned or similar courses as applicable and needed
• Observe a minimum of 8 classes (other than one's own) during the program
• Facilitate middle school and/or high school activities in the afternoons
• Chaperone Student Activity trips off campus & social and extracurricular events on campus
• Serve as an adviser for 8-10 students
• Write an adviser report for each advisee & proofread Teacher Reports written for advisees
• Attend weekly Professional Development workshops for Teaching Interns
• Write and submit Self-Reflection and Program Evaluation before departing campus at the end of the program

Job offers are made on a rolling basis,beginning inFebruary 2024, as completedapplications are receivedand candidates interviewed.The ability to teach in varied subject areas is beneficial and should be noted on the application.Because there are a limited number of courses in each subject area,candidates should submita completeapplication as soon as possible to maximize the likelihood of placement in the area they most prefer.The priorityapplication deadline is January 31, 2024; applications submitted after the deadline will be considered while openings remain.
