Job SummaryThe Summer Operations Assistant will report to the Facilities Operations Coordinator and assist with multiple facets of campus such as Facilities Management, the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Campus Safety among many others. The Summer OA completes a variety of tasks within the mentioned offices to prepare for the fall semester and benefits the entire Susquehanna University campus. This is a temporary position offered only through the summer. This position is defined as a non-exempt position under FLSA regulations. Specific ResponsibilitiesAvailable shifts and tasks:Facilities ManagementAssist Facilities Management with some of the following:- PAINTING*: Fully patch, touch up, and/or paint several residential dorms and offices across Susquehanna University. *This task requires immense dedication—if you decide to do this task, then employees will be ineligible to work on any other OA task over the summer until painting is complete. Ideally this task would be assigned to a team of four to five OAs. If you are interested in this task, please mention this in your cover letter.- LANDSCAPING: Blow leaves, rake rocks, plant/water flowers, pull weeds, etc.- FURNITURE MOVING: Move furniture and prep rooms to be painted over the summer, raise and lower beds for camps, etc.- HVAC: Change air filters in residential dorms and academic offices, read water/electric meters, etc.- CARPENTRY: Put up signage and other materials, remove closet doors, sort keys with the locksmith, etc. Campus SafetyAssist the Office of Campus Safety with some of the following:- SAFETY ROUNDS: Perform daily safety rounds within buildings throughout the week with a focus on mold/leaks. Residence LifeAssist the Office of Residence Life with some of the following:- KEYS: Manage the upkeep of key pulls for summer housing and fall semester, perform a thorough key assessment/inventory and reorganization, assist with rekey and key cards, etc.- RA PREP: Compile RA supply boxes and bulletin board materials, assist with training materials, etc. - HOUSEKEEPING: Complete room condition reports for rooms across campus, clean out items left behind in rooms, transport items to Hawk Stuff or trash, reorganize Hawk Stuff, etc.- INVENTORY: Inventory items within a room/suites/dorm/hall, inventory classrooms, offices, and bike rooms within dorms, etc. Optional and Occasional Tasks: Assist the Office of Events Management, Office of Information Technology, Mail & Print Shop, etc.
Required Qualifications:EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent is required. Minors 16 years of age or older are eligible with a valid working permit. A valid driver’s license (to be utilized in U.S., Canadian, and US territories) is preferred. ExperienceDemonstrative experience working in a team is strongly preferred. History of working on a college campus in a residential setting (student work experience is acceptable) is preferred. Experience handling gardening tools, painting tools, small gardening machinery (leaf blowers, push lawnmowers, etc.) is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesThe Summer OA must have and maintain basic knowledge, understanding, and remembrance of functions regarding the areas of Facilities Management, Campus Safety, and/or Residence Life. They must have the ability to effectively communicate with other Operations Assistants, Operations Assistant Managers, the Director of Operations Assistants, and the Operations Coordinator, the ability to work well in a team, the ability to use technology effectively, stay organized while managing multiple tasks, and the ability to work under pressure. The Summer OA muse demonstrates punctuality, have excellent work ethic, attention to detail determination in all tasks assigned, have skills to move and complete tasks assigned quickly and effectively, demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and use common sense. Physical DemandThe position requires employees to be able to work in atypical weather conditions (wind, light/mid-heavy snow, etc.), remain seated in a normal position or remain standing for long periods of time, reach out with hands and arms, talk and hear and verbally express information or instructions, use their hands to grasp objects, type, pick up objects, move objects or hold objects, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl, climb stairs and/or ladders, and pick up, push or pull up to 20 pounds safely and carry up to 10 feet.
Additional Requirements
- Golf cart certification and mini-van certification through SU Risk Management, if applicable. This requirement does not require a driver’s license and applicants can still apply if they do not have one.
- Completion of online training assigned upon hire.
- Integrity and confidentiality are required. Employees may be granted access to residential dorms, closets, basements, attic areas, academic buildings, offices, and/or campus vehicles through signed out keys, swipe access through ID cards, etc. Employees may not, under any circumstances, access these or any space on-campus without the direct permission from the current Operations Coordinator, regardless of if you are on or off duty. Misuse of these held items will follow disciplinary action that may include suspension and/or termination from the position.
