FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt, F/T Seasonal (Up to 45 hours/week while camp in session)
Pay Rate: $15/hour
2024 Camp Season: Monday, May 27 – Friday, August 2, no camp July 1-5, 2024
Camp at Adventure Science Center (ASC) provides a wide range of science enrichment programs for youth ages 5-12. Programs combine science, technology, engineering and math in ways that encourage kids to actively discover and examine concepts for themselves. We inspire a life-long passion for learning and teach kids creative problem-solving skills, teamwork, persistence and follow-through in a fun learning environment.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Consistent with the mission and vision of the Adventure Science Center, and under the direction of the Learning and Outreach Manager, the Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising his/her assigned group of up to 18 campers that are organized by grades K-1st, 2nd- 3rd, and 4th-6th (ages range 5-12). Camp staff maintain the safety of the campers and ensure the camp’s daily program runs efficiently through detailed supervision and objective decision-making. Camp counselors utilize set curriculum, organized supplies, and established programming to facilitate exciting, memorable camp experiences and activities.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Summer shifts may vary week to week: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:30 pm
- This is a temporary, seasonal summer position
- Candidates must be available the following 2024 Summer Camp dates (some exceptions made):
- Tuesday, May 21 – Friday, May 24 for camp staff training
- Monday, May 27 – Friday, August 2, 2024 (no camp July 1-5, 2024)
- Spring Break Camp Shifts also available:
- Monday, March 11-Friday, March 15, 2024
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide every camper with a safe, fun, memorable, and educational experience.
- Encourage a positive and exciting learning environment, fostering passion for STEM and the Adventure Science Center.
- Actively supervise and interact with campers, facilitating activities and experiments with a focus on STEM content
- Utilize creativity, innovation, and inspiration while facilitating camp activities
- Identify the needs of campers and guests and work to make each experience a positive one
- Proactively engage campers in personal, inspiring interactions
- Assist during emergency and evacuation situations

QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Education: High School graduate. Background in STEM, STEM education a plus
- Ability to manage large groups in a fun, educational environment
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation/facilitation skills
- Positive attitude required: strong desire to work with and inspire children and adult guests from diverse backgrounds in a fun, learning atmosphere
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.
- Typically, walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items (up to 20 pounds unassisted), and 50lbs assisted are required. At times, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. Also, the employee must have manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity.
- Some repetitive motion is involved.
