SUMMER ACTING TEACHER / ACTING COACH

Sitar Arts Center engages DC youth, from early childhood to young adulthood, in building a creative community of learning and belonging that removes financial and cultural barriers to arts education and career training.  We envision a city in which all young people experience transformative moments through quality, accessible arts education and career training and are supported on their path to discover their creativity and achieve their full potential.


At Sitar Arts Center, students engage in affordable, high-quality education and workforce development in the visual, digital, and performing arts. Each semester, 80% of students are from Washington DC households at 60% or less of the area median income. Programs take place year-round during out-of-school time in Sitar's state-of-the-art facilities, which feature an 85-seat theater, visual and digital art studios, a dark room, dance studios, and private and ensemble instrumental music studios.

 

What You’ll Do     

Sitar Arts Center is seeking a wonderful, experienced Acting Teacher/Acting Coach to work with a range of young people to support Camp Sitar this June – August 2024. 


Camp Sitar provides visual, performing, digital art, and movement classes over six weeks to kindergarten - 8th graders in our full-day program: Kids Crafters (K-3rd) & Young Expressionists (4th-8th).  In addition to our Kids Crafters & Young Expressionists programs, we produce a Musical each summer that serves students in 4th-12th grade. 


As the Acting Teacher, you will have a dual role; teaching classes in the morning for our Young Expressionists (4th-8th grade) and working as an Acting Coach in our Musical program in the afternoon.  The Acting Teacher/Acting Coach ensures a happy, engaging, and successful camp experience for students!  

 

Responsibilities Include    

 

CAMP CLASSES  

  • Design and facilitate a curriculum that engages students in acting, improv, scene work etc. for morning classes  
  • Work as a team with teachers and staff to coordinate and participate in all camp activities, field trips, and students showcases.    
  • Supervise camp students during program hours, in and outside of classes, mealtimes, outside play, activities, and transitions.    
  • Attend all meetings, including pre-camp planning and orientations,   and scheduled camp dates.    
  • Track student progress and communicate student needs to staff.   

  

MUSICAL  

  • Teach Acting Skills (ex. enunciation, projection, stage directions, body positions, character analysis, character movement,) to summer musical students when they are not called to other parts of rehearsal (ex. blocking, choreography, and vocal rehearsals)  
  • Supervising musical students during run-throughs and other all-cast rehearsals in the theater  
  • Co-leading daily rehearsal warm-ups with vocal coach and choreographer  
  • Supervising students backstage during the dress rehearsals and five performances   


What You’ll Earn     

Pay is hourly for the morning classes at $22-$30 per hour, based on experience.  For the afternoon musical portion, you will be paid a stipend of $3,000.    

  
When You'll Work    

This six-week position is full-time seasonal starting June 24, 2024 with a daily schedule of 8:30 am–4:30 pm.    

    
Other Required Work Dates will be provided before employment acceptance. All required work dates are paid including:  

  • Pre-Summer Planning Sessions   
  • Restorative Practices and Classroom Management Training 
  • Camp Orientation  
  • Weekly Production Staff Meetings     
  • Saturday Crew Construction Days 
  • Musical Performances 
  • Strike

As the Acting Teacher/Acting Coach, you are a positive, inclusive role model who is warm, supportive, and engaging. You experience immense joy when sharing your craft with young people, meeting their needs and adapting to ensure their safety and success throughout the process. You enjoy collaboration and improvisation and believe strong organization and creative youth development is the key to happy and engaged students. Most importantly you have a strong love for the arts, a strong love for children of all ages, and believe that everyone should have access to the arts.    

 

Key Qualifications and Experience     

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching acting/theater to youth is required.  
  • Experience building curriculum for grades 4th – 12th  
  • Previous experience working in a camp and musical setting.  

  

Preferred Qualifications and Experience  

  • Varied skill set that features a combination of theater games, improvisation, scene work, theater warmups, directing and/or movement, etc.  
  • Knowledge, practice, and experience with differentiated instruction, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism
