JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE:
Substitute Teacher
REPORTS TO:
Principal of Assigned Building
Under the direction of the principal, to help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible children/young adults in the absence of the regular teacher.
TRAINING QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree
    • In any field of study
    • Transcripts
  • BCI & FBI background checks
    • Dated within past 12 months
    • On file with the Ohio Department of Education
    • Can be conducted by Zanesville City Schools Administration Building 956 Moxahala Avenue - ($25 for BCI and $25 FBI)
  • Substitute Teaching License or copy of Teaching License
    • Cost to obtain a substitute license is $25 AND PAYMENT IS MADE DIRECTLY TO THE Ohio Department of Education
    • All first time and renewal licensure applications must be completed online at the Ohio Department of Education - http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Teaching/Educator-Licensure/Apply-for-Certificate-License

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Communication Skills: Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret information relevant to the position, including being able to speak effectively to small and large groups of people, and to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Leadership Ability: Must be able to articulate a vision and mission for the district and provide the appropriate direction, guidance, and management skills to achieve them.
  • Mathematics Skills: Must have the ability to work with basic mathematical and computational concepts.
  • Reasoning Ability: Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Technology Skills: Able to effectively use, as it applies to your specific job function, typical office applications and computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations; must be able to use email.

JOB GOAL
Substitute Teachers are responsible for creating and maintaining a classroom environment that is effective, safe, and conducive to learning.

  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Occasional interaction among unruly children/adults.
  • Many situations that require hand motions, e.g., computer keyboard typing, writing.
  • Consistent requirements to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb and stoop.
  • Consistent requirements to lift, carry, push and pull various supplies and/or equipment up to a maximum of 50 pounds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Familiarize yourself with all school sites at which you may substitute teach.
  2. Respond affirmatively to calls to substitute unless you are hindered by illness or an emergency.
  3. Dress professionally, setting a good example for the students.
  4. Report promptly to the main office when you arrive at the school. Familiarize yourself with routine procedures such as class schedules, lunch times, referring students to the office, etc.
  5. Familiarize yourself with fire and emergency weather drill procedures. Account for all students during these drills.
  6. Assume all the responsibilities of the regular classroom teacher including his/her special duties. A Substitute Teacher is not employed simply to maintain order.
  7. The Substitute Teacher is expected to remain at the school site for the entire length of the teacher day.
  8. Maintain confidentiality with all student records and information.
  9. Maintain the same professional and ethical standards as the classroom teacher when dealing with students, parents, and school staff.
  10. Review and follow the lesson plans furnished by the regular teacher, to include, but not limited to, the following:
    • Secure materials and equipment necessary to complete the lesson plans.
    • Start class promptly after the bell.
    • Contact the principal or designee if lesson plans are not available.
    • Be prepared in advance for emergencies by having plans for alternative activities.
  11. Keep all students in your classroom under supervision at all times. NEVER leave a class unattended.
  12. Observe the principles of good classroom control and management. If a problem occurs that you are unable to manage, contact the principal or designee immediately for assistance. DO NOT create situations that encourage students to challenge your authority.
  13. Leave the classroom in "proper" order. You are legally responsible for the pupils, equipment, and materials.
  14. Prepare a written account summarizing classroom activities, assignments and any comments for the regular teacher.
  15. Accurately report class and homeroom attendance according to the procedures at the assigned school.
  16. Notify the school administration immediately should an accident, illness or discipline problem occur.

  • Zanesville Middle School 7:45 AM - 2:35 PM Arrival time for sub is 7:35 AM
  • Elementary Schools 8:45 AM - 3:10 PM Arrival time for sub is 8:30 AM
