Job description

Under general supervision, provides reference and reader advisory services for all ages. May assist with programs and special events for adults or children, and special projects. This is a substitute position to fill in when a regular librarian is unavailable, or to help with special events. There is no set schedule; hours will vary from zero to ten hours per week.

WORK ACTIVITIES:
Provides reference and readers' advisory assistance to patrons of all ages at either Adult Services or Youth Services desk, in person and over the phone.
Provides instructions to library patrons in the use of the public access catalog, the library collection, databases and online content services, and use of the internet.
Schedules use of study rooms, program rooms, and public access computers.
Maintains an awareness of library materials and professional trends, methods, and ethics.
Informs supervisor of all work activities.
Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned. A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
Must have an American Library Association accredited Master of Library or Information Services degree.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Three year(s) of professional library experience is preferred.
Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
Must have excellent English communicative skills, both oral and written, to include spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Must have excellent customer service skills.
Must be able to work independently, prioritize duties and tasks, and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
Must have basic working knowledge of adult, teen and children's literature and the practices and principles of modern public library operations, especially reference and reader advisory. Extensive experience working at a library public service desk preferred.
Must be skilled in computer applications and software to include MS Office, Teams, library ILS software, computerized databases, and downloadable e-books and audiobooks.
Must be able to work well under pressure and stress while maintaining a professional, pleasant, and friendly demeanor toward staff and the public at all times.
Able to operate office equipment as needed.
