Job Summary

The Study Away Coordinator serves as a coordinator within the Study Abroad unit of the International Center. The primary focus of the position is to take the lead in specific study abroad/away program areas and non-credit international travel registration processes, provide specialized study abroad/away advising, and provide support to the Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs in the following areas: development of new programs, marketing and outreach, faculty recruitment, risk management, orientations and re-entry, program assessment, and event planning. This position works actively and independently with Cal Poly faculty, staff, students, and campus offices such as Risk Management, the Office of University Diversity and Inclusivity, Academic Personnel, Cal Poly Scholars, Financial Aid and Human Resources. The coordinator independently reviews and makes recommendations for acceptance of group travel requests. The coordinator helps prepare and deliver pre-departure orientations for all assigned portfolio programs, participates in program assessment, and takes the lead on planning assigned events. The coordinator also develops budgets and fee approvals for faculty and staff travel. This coordinator will be responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of international safety education, training, protocols and communications, and act as a contact for international program emergency response for the Cal Poly campus. The coordinator will act as a University-wide resource related to safety abroad, and will provide expertise and support to ensure programs, activities and actions are conducted according to University policy and protocols as they relate to safety abroad. The coordinator will have direct client and program contact with assigned study abroad service providers. The coordinator will be up to date on issues and trends in the field and implement creative solutions for proactive and responsive programming on behalf of the University. The coordinator trains and leads graduate interns, student ambassadors and peer advisors as assigned. 

Department Summary

The primary mission of the Cal Poly International Center is to provide leadership and coordination for international activities and programs and to serve as a catalyst for internationalization efforts at Cal Poly. The IC maintains administrative authority and university-wide oversight of international engagement and initiatives supported by the campus. We are committed to providing equity and access to services and programs for the populations we serve, including for students studying abroad and international students and scholars at Cal Poly. We provide support to campus efforts in internationalizing the curriculum and in creating global partnerships. 

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.

  • Advise students individually and in groups on complex student related matters.

  • Ability to gather and analyze data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.  

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $60,312 - $70,704 Per Year

Classification Range: $58,548 - $83,400 Per Year
