Job Description:
This position provides direct services to students in academic, career, financial, and personal counseling. The position will also monitor participants' progress for eligibility for funds maintained and administered through the program and facilitate individual, group, virtual, and online programs to strengthen participants' financial literacy knowledge. The position will assist with identifying, recruiting, selecting program participants, coordinating, and conducting general student activities to promote participant persistence and graduation. Activities will include workshops, field trips, and other activities that connect students to campus life and student organizations. This position will also train and supervise program students to serve as Peer Mentors, Supplemental Instruction Leaders, Learning Community Leaders, and Living Learning Community Resident Advisors to assist with the above activities. The Student Success Specialist will collaborate and coordinate with other programs on campus that serve program-eligible students. This position will participate in local, regional, and national professional development activities and involvement with various university committees. The candidate will also motivate voluntary participants to take part in program services; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty and other campus personnel; work independently; manage, prioritize, and complete multiple projects/tasks in an efficient and timely manner while maintaining focus on organizational goals; contribute to a team effort to accomplish program goals and objectives; be sensitive to and work with a diverse student population including minority students and students with disabilities; maintain the confidentiality of information; understand and interpret formalized policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations.
Job Specific Duties:
• Assist with counseling and therapeutic services to students regarding personal, social,
emotional, developmental, and mental health issues
• Provide individual counseling, group leadership, instruction, and seminar delivery to assist
students in their growth and development
• Provide educational programs and workshops
• Maintain a caseload of around 80-100 students on average per year
• Teach college courses such as University 100 (Freshmen Orientation Class), University 102
(Strategies for Academic Success), University 103 (Career Planning for the Undecided
Student), UNI 400 (Preparing for Graduate School)
• Consult with faculty, staff, or community programs to assist in resolving student problems and
concerns
• Participate in the planning and implementation of program goals and objectives
• Perform interviews for students who apply to the program
• Execute crisis intervention techniques, policies, and procedures
• Collaborate with academic departments for planning and scheduling of Learning Community
and Supplemental Instruction courses
• Collaborate with Housing and Residence Life for planning and maintaining Living Learning
Communities on campus
• Provide academic advising assistance regarding course selections and curriculum plans
• Provide career assessments and career guidance based on theoretical models
• Assist with financial aid concerns and processes
• Complete administrative tasks (i.e., monthly and yearly reports as assigned, etc.)
• Provide indirect services to students via email, the student list-serv, and other forms of
communication.
• Help maintain the program's social media platforms and website
• Build and conduct surveys using Qualtrics
• Maintain contact notes and case management tasks related to student records and progress
• Construct appropriate individual academic plans for participants
• Serve on various university committees regarding hiring staff, event planning, and retention
strategies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of advising models and financial aid policies and procedures.
This position is grant-funded, considered 'at-will' employment, and depends on
continued federal funding of the Student Support Services grant. The current grant runs through August 31. 2025, with the potential for renewal every five years.

Salary Range
$36,000-$55,00 Salary is commensurate with education and experience
Required Qualifications
Education
Master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, higher education, or a related field. If education is less than the requirement, consideration may be provided for candidates currently enrolled in a related master's degree program who can complete the degree within 24 months of hiring with related experience to this position.
Experience
Minimum of one year of academic advising or relevant experience, familiarity, and understanding of academic policies; knowledge of university policies and procedures; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong organization skills; ability to work effectively with others in a team environment; demonstrated ability to utilize modern technology and communication platforms; and have an enthusiastic and motivated personality. Must be able to perform all essential duties outlined in the job description.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
Experience
Two or more years of experience working with college students who are first-generation and low socioeconomic status; academic advising; financial literacy regarding federal financial aid and personal budgeting; experience in training, career exploration; classroom instruction; prior experience working in a federal TRIO or equal opportunity program; Banner and EAB Navigate advising platform; and identify as a first-generation and or low-income college student.
