Student Success Advisor - First-Generation Student Initiatives

(MULTIPLE HIRES)

Office of Minority Student Affairs


Job Summary

Responsible for assisting with advising, mentoring, and coaching to select freshmen and transfer students in the First-Generation Student Initiatives unit of the OMSA. Work closely with academic units to investigate and troubleshoot barriers that prevent first-generation Student Success. In collaboration with the OMSA's units and external campus wide stakeholders, provide critical support to advance the affirmation, holistic development, retention, and persistence of first-generation students at the University of Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • ADVISING
    • Serve as an advocate and resource for assigned students and maintain frequent, systematic contact with those students.
    • Build, foster and maintain intentional relationships with the colleges departments and/or relevant campus units to ensure accurate dissemination of information.
    • Direct purposeful individual and small group discussion with students to identify academic strengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social life on campus, and provide advice regarding viable pathways that may lead to enhanced Student Success.
    • Assist students in developing a Student Success plan, an informal co-curricular transcript and a realistic career pathway plan.
    • Maintain detailed and thorough notes on individual advising sessions using unit and campus level reporting mechanisms while upholding appropriate confidentiality.
    • Assist supervisor with the coordination of the OMSA communication strategy and shares said information with colleges, departments and/or relevant campus units.
    • Assist supervisor with the development of reports, data analysis and assessment of students’ term by term engagement.
    • Participate in the weekly drop-in rotation to advise students seeking assistance but not specifically targeted to receive assigned mentoring services.
    • Collaborate with the colleges and departmental academic advisors to identify students whose behaviors align with early alerts and refer students for academic retention services.
    • Develop positive relationships with the college and departmental academic advisors who assist students in understanding and negotiating the academic rules and regulations that govern academic eligibility, progress, and successful degree completion.
    • Maintain awareness of a variety of institutional information including new majors, minors, certificate programs, deadlines and important dates etc.
    • Maintain awareness of current trends and best practices regarding student outreach and/or retention; assist with developing retention strategies, and work closely with staff in implementing, evaluating, and improving retention strategies.
  • ASSIGNED AREA OF SPECIALIZATION AND SUPERVISION
    • Create, charter, plan, organize, and execute the logistics and operations relating to their assigned area of specialization. Potential assigned project areas may include: the Proud to Be First Gen workshop series, summer orientation/welcome programming, Tri-Alpha first-generation honor society, course seminar support, First-Gen ally training, or short-term/faculty-led study abroad.
    • Co-develops and manages the first-generation Student Initiatives communication strategy (social media, print, and annual reports).
    • Co-develops and manages the growth strategy for the assigned area of specialization.
    • Co-develops and implements the related first-generation Student Initiatives assessment plan.
    • Participate in hiring undergraduate student volunteers, workers, and/or interns.
    • Assist with onboarding, training, and evaluating assigned undergraduate student volunteers, workers, and/or interns.
    • Supervise the daily work assignments of assigned undergraduate student volunteers, workers and/or interns.
  • OTHER GENERAL DUTIES
    • Participate in the annual new student recruiting and yielding activities.
    • Perform evening, weekend and business/conference travel as requested.
    • Participate in staff, committee, and other meetings as assigned.
    • Assist in the general administrative planning and resource allocation.
    • Assist with meeting the operational needs by performing other appropriate related duties.

Additional Physical Demands

Pursuant to unit policy and with a completed UIUC employment agreement form, hybrid remote schedule may be an option. Remote schedules are subject to change based on operational needs and performance. This position involves evening, weekend and business/conference travel as requested.

Travel Requirements

10% Occasional travel for professional development, outreach, and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a discipline appropriate for administering comprehensive, collegiate academic support service and mentoring. Two years of experience with academic advising, student retention, academic coaching, mentoring, or counseling. A minimum of two years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, first generation, low-income, TRIO or EOP. A minimum of one-year experience in one or more of the following areas: academic success programming, study aboard, service learning and leadership, career development, admissions and/or diversity, equity and inclusion programming.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of work experience in one or more of the following areas: academic success programming, study aboard, service learning and leadership, career development, admissions, mentorship, and/or diversity, equity and inclusion programming.
Working knowledge of available academic majors/minors and supportive campus/community resources.
Working knowledge of online student systems (e.g., Banner, uAchieve or DARS, Transferology, Canva, Moodle, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to think clearly, creatively, and to solve problems proactively. Excellent communication and administrative skills. Ability to learn and disseminate detailed information. Ability to work effectively individually and collaboratively. Ability to manage competing priorities successfully. Ability to advise, mentor, and coach students successfully. Student centered and service oriented.

Appointment Information

These are a 100% full-time Academic Professional positions, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after June 16, 2024. Salary is 58,000.00 and includes an excellent benefits package.
