Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Superintendent or designee, the position is responsible for performing manual labor of various kinds calling for physical strength and endurance, plus operating equipment for general park maintenance.
Expected Work Schedule* 10 weeks from June - September Monday-Friday; 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. *Please note that dates, times, and locations may be subject to change.
Essential Duties
Essential Duties for the Parks Department:
  • Cuts grass and weeds with hand or power mowers, rakes grass and leaves, trims hedges or shrubbery, and grades lawns and park areas.
  • Picks up and disposes of rubbish, tree branches, food waste, and other waste and litter, and acts as a dump person in designated dumping areas.
  • Erects, dismantles and paints playground equipment.
  • Assists in planting, transplanting, pruning, and cultivating trees and plants.
  • Keeps power equipment and hand tools in proper working condition by cleaning, making minor adjustments, and reporting problems.
  • Maintains baseball/softball diamonds, and performs other general maintenance of parks, building and grounds, and daily cleaning of park buildings, including painting.
  • Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties for the Department of Public Works Department:
  • General labor working with road crews.
  • Cuts grass and weeds with hand or power mowers, rakes grass and leaves, trims hedges or shrubbery, and grades lawns and park areas.
  • Repair street signs.
  • Drives utility vehicle with trailer to remote sites to do grounds keeping duties.
  • Cleaning and painting barricades, light fixtures, and streets.
  • Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Essential Duties for the Wastewater Department:
  • Working in the laboratory conducting testing such as total solids, pH and bacterial testing.
  • Preparation of reagents, bench-sheets and washing dishes.
  • Cut grass and weeds with hand or power mowers, rakes grass and leaves, trims hedges or shrubbery, and grades lawns and park areas.
  • Apply paint to surfaces including walls, floors, doors, and cabinets.
  • Light janitorial duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming.
  • General landscaping duties.
  • Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties for the Water Department:
  • Cuts grass and weeds with hand or power mowers, rakes grass and leaves, trims hedges or shrubbery, and grades lawns and park areas.
  • Light janitorial duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, and filing.
  • Conduct Fire Hydrant maintenance, which includes flushing, oiling and painting.
  • Permit hole restoration - replacement of black dirt, sand, grass seed and sod.
  • Hand digging and shoveling of black dirt, sand, grass seed and sod.
  • Operating valve exercising equipment to conduct valve exercising.
  • Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduating High School Seniors intending to enroll as a full-time undergraduate college student in the fall.
  • Undergraduate full-time college students who are enrolled and intend to continue on a full-time undergraduate basis in the fall. A full-time student shall consist of a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to operate a variety of mechanical equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimum of direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, and exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact when dealing with the general public.
  • Ability to operate City equipment in a safe manner.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:1. Graduating High School Seniors intending to enroll as a full-time undergraduate college student in the fall. 2. Undergraduate full-time college students who are enrolled and intend to continue on a full-time undergraduate basis in the fall. A full-time student shall consist of a minimum of 12 credits per semester.3. Students are eligible to work for the City of Racine no more than the four (4) summers within the 5-year period immediately following their high school graduation, providing they remain full-time undergraduates the semester preceding and the semester following the summer of employment. The summer after college graduation and before full-time graduate school is not an eligible summer for student employment.
