GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision, the research student will be provided with the opportunity to be mentored by professionals in their chosen research field, to become familiar with the use of state-of-the-art scientific equipment and technology, and to learn valuable interpersonal and presentation skills. The goal is to expose aspiring researchers and clinicians to exciting advances in biomedical sciences that will help define their career paths.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Report to PhD or MD researcher or their designee for the purpose of participating in specific experimental, scientific protocols. Research Students will often work closely with another lab member, such as a graduate student, postdoc, technician or lab manager.
• Gain an understanding of the latest research methods, instruments and testing procedures.
• Learn how to design experiments and see how their test results can contribute to a larger research project. The experimental approaches and specific techniques vary widely, depending on the lab’s expertise and the demands of their current projects.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of their work in lab notebooks, and to comply with appropriate lab safety guidelines.
• Attend scheduled laboratory meetings at which lab members (including interns) describe and discuss their results.
• Attend weekly journal clubs where recent papers from the scientific literature are presented.
• May assist in writing papers for publication and scientific presentations based on research performed.
• Keep abreast of new techniques and review literature in the field pertinent to the area of research. Analyze data and prepare figures for presentations/manuscripts.
• Performs other related duties as required (such as routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment).
Job Duties & Responsibilities
• We seek energetic, independent learners who are interested in pursuing a career in public health research.
• The students will assist with ongoing research projects, which may include literature reviews, data collection, and/or analysis.
• Students will be required to join seminars, team meetings, and other training related to their topic area.
• Students are required to present their work at the end of the session.
• The expected commitment is 12 weeks at 40 Hr /wk
• Students are expected to be in the office at least 3 days/week onsite in Detroit, MI
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Proof of enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program. Highly motivated and organized.
• Requires the manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.
