Our Student Nurse Externship is the perfect way for the Student Nurse to grow clinical competence and prepare for the exciting journey ahead as a Registered Nurse.
In the role you will:
- Assists Registered Nurse assigned to the patient with assessment of the patient by monitoring parameters outlined by the Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nursing Standards of Practice.
- Assists the Registered Nurse assigned to the patient in planning of nursing care by providing input to the nurse related to the observed effects of previous treatments or nursing care.
- Assists the Registered Nurse assigned to the patient with the implementation of nursing care by performing nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by the registered nurse such as: nasogastric irrigations and nasogastric feedings, indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterization, catheter care and removal, dressing changes, calculating intake and output.
- Provides direct patient care such as personal hygiene, positioning, ambulating, transporting, nutritional intake/feeding and bed making.
- Assists with patient admission and discharge and setting up special equipment
- Assists the Registered Nurse with evaluation of patient and assessment by reporting patient response to pain management, vital signs, and elimination.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned units. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Potential for regular exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases requiring observance of the universal precautions which requires wearing protective clothing, gloves and mask as appropriate and observance of safe work practices.
Requirements
Education – Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program and have no more than one year until expected graduation.
Experience – Nursing fundamentals completed, Minimum of one Med/Surg clinical rotation completed
Licensure/Certification – Maryland CNA Certification, BLS compliant per policy to start
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities – Demonstrates high standards of professionalism by maintaining a professional image in all he/she does, ability to perform technical skills, responds promptly and positively to patients, families, associates, and all others in a respectful, courteous, and confidential manner.
