General Description / Primary Purpose:

  • This position reports under the Student Government Associate Director and serves as the Student Government Assistant Director to supervise and lead the Legislative Branch, Judicial Branch, Office of Elections, and Social Media & Communications Coordinator. This position assists the Associate Director in the development and implementation of the Student Government daily functions. This includes strategic planning, setting benchmarks, implementation of goals and expectations, objectives, and annual reports. The Student Government Assistant Director is also responsible for compiling and finalizing the Student Government Annual Report and submitting to the Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs office. Oversees the completion and ongoing modifications to the constitutions, statutes, titles, bills, and policies and procedures of all branches.
  • Works collaboratively with a variety of university and department staff to ensure each program’s success. Directly supervises designated group for planning and implementing systems and processes that successfully perform the work and fulfill the mission and the goals and values of Student Government. Conduct processes for forming and implementing policies and procedures for the Legislative, Judicial, and Office of Elections. In addition, this position oversees the ongoing modifications and changes to the Student Government Constitutions and Statues while maintaining accurate records of said changes and updates which are continually being modified.

Job Function:

  • Student Government Advising & Supervision
    • Manages and oversees all daily responsibilities and activities for the Legislative (40-45 students), Judicial (9 Students), Office of Elections (4 Students), and Social Media & Communications Coordinator.
    • Provides individual leadership and guidance including counseling student staff in social, cultural, mental health, and personal areas directly impacting Student Government.
    • Provides individual leadership and direction including counseling student staff in social, cultural, mental health, and personal areas affecting student development.
    • Provides leadership and advocates for the Student Government Legislative Branch, Judicial Branch, and Office of Elections positions while planning, developing, and assisting with their goals and objectives.

  • Training
    • Coordinates the development and completion of trainings and workshops for the Legislative, Judicial, and Office of Elections.

  • Policy & Procedure/Legislative Subject Matter Expert
    • Provides day-to-day direction and management to ensure that student staff abide by the University of North Florida Policies & Procedures, Student Government Policies & Procedures, Constitution and Statues, Sunshine Laws, Southworth, FERPA, Roberts Rules of Order, and the University Code of Conduct.
    • Attends all senate and committee meetings for compliance on parliamentary procedures to be sure they are properly followed while providing account of precedents and offering guidance.
    • Oversees the assigned branches regarding development of policies and policy compliance, and public and governmental related issues.
    • Researches and collects documentation and policies from other SUS schools to find best practices.
    • Reviews legislation before first read in senate for any conflicts of inconsistencies with existing policies and procedures.
    • Maintains and updates records and history of signed legislation, attorney general interpretations, judicial reviews and decisions, and other important historical documentation, and ensures that appropriate records are send to University of North Florida Carpenter Library Digital Commons.

  • Elections
    • Manages and oversees the election process for Student Government elections held twice a year, including organizing and executing the election cycle for the Presidential, Vice Presidential, and Senatorial positions.
    • Serves as a resource to members of the Student Government senate and potential senate candidates.

  • Programming Initiatives
    • Offers counsel and support for legislation, Student Government senate initiatives, and leadership development.

  • Student Government Communiques
    • Responsible for compiling and finalizing the Student Government Annual Report and submitting to the Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs office.
    • Directs the Social Media & Communications Coordinator tasks and assists as needed.
    • Assists the student communications director with interviews and reviews for accuracy.

  • Committees
    • Sits on the Student Government Scholarship Committee as a voting member.

  • May serve on a variety of institutional committees and represents the interests of Student Government.
  • Attend a variety of local and state meetings related providing leadership for students and staff of Student Government.
  • May attend a variety of ceremonial functions and may travel to professional conferences.
Required Qualifications:

This position requires either (a) Master’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; (b) Bachelor’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and four years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 8 years of direct experience.

  • Critical component for this position is enforcing the rules and regulations of the Student Government Constitution and ensuring the student staff use proper parliamentary procedures.
  • To this end, the Student Government Assistant Director will often be required to demonstrate a caring attitude, utilize conflict resolution skills, and ensure that every effort is made to create satisfied students.
  • This position is often required to work outside the normal 8:00A – 5:00P office hours as dictated by Student Government related meetings, events, or other programming, and internal processes.

This position has been designated as a CSA because it involves significant responsibility for student and campus activities and/or responsibility for campus security. As such, any person in this position must report to the University Police Department a crime or an incident that might be a crime that he/she becomes aware of. This position has a reporting requirement because the University believes that your responsibility for students, campus activities and/or campus security will make you someone members of the University community will see as an authority figure and someone to whom they can seek help. A CSA is not expected to investigate or determine whether a criminal incident actually took place. A CSAs responsibility is a duty to report. All positions designated as CSAs are required to complete an online or in-person training session.
