SUMMARY
As a Welder, this position is responsible for welding structural steel in various positions and using various tools to align and secure parts before assembly at marine or railroad projects for Russell Marine, LLC. The Welder will work from specifications provided by the Foreman, where defects are examined and specifications are met. Various welding techniques are used to obtain the required configurations and positions for welding.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Welds structural (sheet) steel in all positions (3G and 4G are most common, with the occasional 6G).
- Lays out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies before assembly using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, flange lineup pins, wrap-arounds, center finders, and rulers. This position is responsible for self-performed fittings.
- Examine work pieces for defects; measures work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be eligible/willing to obtain one upon hire.
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience in structural welding in vertical (3G) and overhead (4G) positions within the construction industry. Must pass the company-assigned 3G and 4G weld test with satisfactory results before hire.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): Thorough knowledge of practices and materials of the welding craft & trade. Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills in English to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification(s): Professional Welding Certification, preferred. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or Stick welding certification.
- Experience: SMAW or stick welding. 6G (horizontal welding) experience, and cutting torch experience.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA): General knowledge of Marine or Railroad construction terminology, and/or pile driving knowledge or skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The individual must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
- The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes a hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, personal floatation devices (PFD), and/or other protective equipment as required.
- The individual frequently works near moving mechanical parts and must be able to adapt to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
- The individual may be required to work long hours and/or weekends. Additionally, some out-of-town or overnight travel may be required.
- The individual is required to walk, step, climb, or otherwise move from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
- The individual is going to be required on occasion to climb ladders, stoop, board boats, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
- The individual may be required to work in confined spaces, climb vertical ladders of a height of 6 ft. or greater, and/or elevated heights.
- The individual may be required to lift objects with a minimum of 10 lbs. and a maximum single-person lift of 50 lbs. This could result in frequent lifting or carrying depending on project needs.
