Summary/Objective:

Quality control inspector for major Structural Steel erector and fabricator in the Richmond, VA area. Work directly for the in-house Quality Control Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Review shop drawings, models, and submittals for conformance with project specifications by direct review and by leveraging the knowledge and experience of others in the project team when necessary
  • Provide reports that reinforce activities that are being performed in conformance with each specific projects established standard and constructively confront non-conformances to produce desired outcome in a timely manner
  • Verify and document that all materials received for the project are in conformance with the approved submittal, managed and stored properly, and are acceptable for use in the project.
  • Inspect materials received for damage from supplier/manufacturer or out of mill tolerances. Coordinate with QC Manager and shop supervisor if there are any questionable materials to be held from fabrication, returned to customer, or scrapped
  • Provide weld logs, material logs, and travelers for tracking fabrication and delivery to ensure conformance of project requirements and expectations
  • Perform dimensional checks, ensure pieces are cut and processed to the correct lengths, with the correct bolt hole size and pattern, check fit-up of welded and bolted components for plumb, level, square
  • Perform visual inspection of welded connections under supervision of QC Manager, communicate presence of any discontinuities or defects to steel shop supervision and QC Manager
  • Perform and witness torque verification of mechanical connections, ensure torque wrenches are calibrated, and ensure correct bolting materials used.
  • Maintain control of welding consumables, monitor welding rod ovens, rod/wire storage, coordinate with shop supervision and QC Manager if there are any nonconforming items or if there are other issues such as low quantity or receipt of damaged wire spools.
  • Maintain calibrated metering and testing equipment (M&TE) as well as other inspection tools issued to ensure that equipment properly functions. Ensure calibration is accurate and maintained.
  • Witness truck loading and document on traveler that each piece loaded is accounted for, and ensure that load is secured, that interference of parts will not cause damage to any component.
  • Ensure that a copy of QA traveler is submitted to shop supervision as well as part of shipping docket

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Required:

  • 3-5 years' of experience in the Structural Steel fabrication industry
  • Have a working knowledge of the AISC Standards
  • Have experience performing fit-up, weld, bolt and paint inspections and testing.
  • Ability to check fabrication against plans, specifications, codes, and shop standards.
  • Prepare all paperwork and documentation and coordinate with third party inspectors.
  • Strong computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and able to multi-task.
  • Be flexible and adaptable team player.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Strong organizational & communication skills.
  • Ability to read Architectural and Structural Construction drawings.
  • Must adhere to required Shop PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Some light lifting and bending may be required
  • Must be able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail and demonstrate problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to pass post-offer pre-employment drug screen, and may be required to satisfactorily complete additional background checks as required (i.e. DMV, criminal history)
  • Must adhere to all company policy and procedures
  • Must be available to work assigned schedules

The work environment and physical demands required would be representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, and may include, but are not limited to the following:

Work Environment:
  • May work in varying temperatures; both inside and outside, including inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold and dampness
  • May be required to use hearing protection in and around areas with moderate/high exposure to high noise levels
  • May be required to use respiratory protection when working in areas with fumes, or airborne particles including dust
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or at heights

Physical Demands:
  • This role routinely exposes construction equipment such as heavy machinery, hand and power tools
  • While performing duties of the job the employee may work aloft, climb, bend, pull, reach overhead, stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to correctly identify all colors of a color-coded cable/wires and see close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus
Travel:
  • May require infrequent travel

Preferred:

  • Prior military experience
  • CWI
  • Field erection experience is helpful, but not required.
