Position Summary: JMT's Hunt Valley, MD office is seeking a Structural Intern to work with our Transportation Structural team. The candidate will work on a variety of assignments, both independently and with a project team. The candidate will be supported by engineers on the design team while learning to complete tasks at the highest level. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
JMT is currently seeking qualified candidates for the winter of 2023/2024.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Perform general civil/structural engineering tasks to support various project managers, as required
- Assist in the production of engineering drawings using MicroStation
- Develop quantity take-offs
- Review shop drawings and submittals
- Assist in the field performing bridge and structure inspections
- Write and review bridge inspection reports
Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

Required Skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects and manage time

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including WORD and EXCEL
Required Experience
- Full time undergraduate student in a 4-year ABET accredited civil engineering program with a structural concentration
- Students should have completed or plan to be enrolled in courses such as structural analysis, steel or concrete design, and geotechnical engineering
Preferred Experience
- Experience using MicroStation
- Experience using structural analysis and design software and Mathcad
- 3D Structural Modeling
- Experience with AASHTO LRFD bridge design
- EIT certification, or the ability to quickly obtain certification
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc., within the office environment. Inspections of transportation structures (bridges, retaining walls, and culverts) may be required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
