The City of Eagan's Water Resources division is seeking two Stormwater Interns to join our team this summer. This is a great opportunity to gain skills and experience in your field! The Stormwater Intern supports Eagan's compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) General Permit through inspections, recordkeeping, field data collection, and maintenance of gray/green stormwater infrastructure.
This position runs May 20, 2024 through August 26, 2024.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in intern development opportunities hosted by various City departments throughout the term of the internship
- Inspect stormwater infrastructure and treatment practices
- Assess conditions, proper functions, and maintenance needs
- Record inspections and assessments in computer applications
- Collect, upload, and input global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) data
- Perform routine maintenance of stormwater treatment practices
- Public Education and engagement activities
- Perform physical and chemical monitoring of lakes and stormwater runoff
- Assist Water Resources intern with lake monitoring and related activities
- Other duties as assigned
- Competently and safely operate:
- Data collection equipment and mobile devices
- Various hand tools and outdoor power tools
- 4-wheel drive or light utility vehicles and non-motorized watercraft
- Personal computer, iPad, and peripheral equipment
- Valid driver's license
- Must be currently enrolled in -OR- have graduated in the previous 12 months from high school, trade school, college, or a university in a program emphasizing or related to civil engineering, water resources or environmental engineering, stormwater management, or landscape construction
- Ability to perform the essential position functions under the working conditions as described
You may be a great fit for this internship if you have:
- Previous training or experience in civil engineering, municipal utilities, urban stormwater management, structural analysis
- Previous training or experience in data collection and management
- Previous training or experience with ESRI GIS mapping and analytical software or similar applications
Position Expectations:
- Ability to work in teams and to communicate effectively with co-workers and public
- Ability to think analytically and independently, and to make appropriate judgments
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office computer programs
- Willingness to work in a variety of conditions, with or without supervision
Working Conditions, Physical Demands, and Hours of Work:
- Full-time, seasonal, 40 hours per week
- Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm with occasional hours before/after normal working hours 75% field work, 25% office
- May require working outdoors in all weather conditions from May through August
- Conditions may include uneven, rough terrains in densely vegetated areas
- Must have ability to lift, turn, move, carry, place, and retrieve documents, tools, or objects weighing up to 70 pounds from all levels of a 7-foot high car top, storage shelf, or file cabinet
