JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Sterile & Hazardous Compounding Pharmacy Technician

REPORTS TO POSITION: Pharmacy Infusion Services Manager

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The St. Charles Health System Pharmacy provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient pharmaceutical care services to ensure safe and effective medication use.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Sterile & Hazardous Compounding Pharmacy Technicianworks under the supervision of a pharmacist in either hospital or infusion clinic pharmacy settings. This position assists in preparing, ordering, and distributing IV and other medications in accordance with policies and procedures, and state and federal law. They assist with the batching of IV medications intended for administration to patients within the hospital as well as perform other technical and clerical duties as necessary for the daily operation of the Pharmacy department.

This position does not directly manage any other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Assists with the accurate preparation and distribution of medications.

Prepares and handles chemotherapy, hazardous products, blood products and other medications in a safe manner utilizing appropriate safety equipment to assure environmental safety of self and others.

Handles and disposes of all medications including hazardous substances in accordance with departmental policy.

Performs accurate product selection, dosage calculations and compounding of agents utilizing manufacturer literature, written procedural guidelines and applications of specialized knowledge.

Prepares IV or other medications using aseptic technique for administration by the nursing staff, maintaining accurate documentation and properly billing, labeling, compounding, packaging, and delivering these medications in an accurate safe, and timely manner.

Prepares and batches IV admixtures according to appropriate policies and procedures.

Manages inventory of supplies related to sterile compounding.

Verifies inventory received against the invoice noting any exceptions and communicating these to immediate supervisor or pharmacy inventory coordinator.

Maintains and cleans the equipment necessary to perform duties, reporting any failures or need for repair to immediate supervisor or Pharmacy Manager immediately.

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, maintains daily logs and outdate monitoring as required by regulatory agencies. This includes but is not limited to temperature logs, cleaning logs, compounding log books and monthly outdates.

Maintains, prepares, and delivers the floor stock medications by nursing units to replenish their stock per department policy and procedure.

Receives, dispenses, and delivers controlled substances following policies and procedures. Reports any discrepancies immediately.

Accurately bills and credits medication charges as necessary.

EDUCATION:

Required: High school diploma or GED.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

Required: Current Oregon Board of Pharmacy - Certified Technician license or ability to obtain prior to starting. Maintenance of National is not required once Oregon licensure is obtained.

Valid Oregon driver's license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.

Preferred: Sterile and Hazardous compounding certification

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Minimum one (1) year hospital Pharmacy Technician and/or three (3) years Pharmacy Technician experience.

Preferred: Experience as Pharmacy Technician performing sterile compounding.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, carrying 1-10 pounds, operation of a motor vehicle for caregivers that are couriers.

Frequently (50%): Lifting 1-10 pounds, pushing, or pulling 1-25 pounds, grasping/squeezing.

Occasionally (25%): Sitting, bending, climbing stairs, lifting, and carrying 11-25 pounds,

Use of clear and audible speaking voice and ability to hear normal speech level.

Rarely (10%): Keyboard operation, stooping/kneeling/crouching, reaching overhead, pushing, or pulling 25-50 pounds.

Never (0%): Climbing ladder/stepstool, lifting, or carrying 25-50 pounds, whispered speech level, operation of a motor vehicle.
