Job description

Job Description

Salary: $22-$23/HR. DOE

Program & Organization Overview

The Center for African Immigrants and Refugees Organization (CAIRO)’s mission is dedicated to enhancing social justice and achieving parity for the diverse

African immigrants and refugee communities in Oregon and Central Minnesota through community organizing, collaborative leadership, and service advocacy. We envision a more just and equitable society in which children, youth, and families live in sustained, supportive communities, which reinforce the cultural wealth and lived experience of the family.

The Schools, Parents and Community Engaged (SPACE) Program within CAIRO is a school-based support program that works closely with African students, parents and schools to build spaces where children feel safe, supported and ready to learn. We work with African immigrant students in classrooms, within families and in the broader community. We currently serve schools in the Beaverton, Reynolds, Hillsboro and David Douglas school districts where we provide academic support within the school and out of school tutoring, mentoring, socio-emotional support, and connecting families to community services that they need. We have staff assigned at the schools to address barriers related to language and culture and build bridges between the schools, students and parents.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) program within SPACE is a subject-specific support program. It organizes and delivers STEAM educational experiences and support to all students and families that CAIRO serves. This includes afterschool program support, field trips and other special events, and STEAM-specific tutoring.

Position Summary

STEAM Instructors are responsible for delivering the content of the STEAM program. Instructors work in collaboration with the STEAM Coordinator, other SPACE staff, and school and district staff to provide students and families with high-quality, individualized experiences. This includes helping adapt STEAM curricula and activities to match the cultural needs of the African families CAIRO serves.

This is a part-time (24 hours per week), non-exempt position. This will include one session a day at different sites across Multnomah and Washington counties, and the instructor will be responsible for their own travel (with mileage reimbursement depending on the site).
