Job description

Job Description

In November 2015, STAT was launched as a new national media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source for tough-minded coverage of the business of making medicines, health tech, science, and public health. We produce daily news, investigative articles, and narrative projects in addition to multimedia features, podcasts, and opinion pieces. Our team of editors and reporters have won numerous journalism awards, including being named as a 2021 Pulitzer finalist. STAT is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent from The Boston Globe.

The Role

The 12-month program is aimed at journalists interested in covering disability issues while learning the basics of health and science reporting. This fellowship is meant to focus on the intersections of disability and health care, the life sciences, and a rapidly expanding health technology sector. Fellows will report on the barriers disabled people face in these realms, and explore possible solutions.

As a disability reporting fellow, you will be pioneering a new beat at STAT — expanding our reach into new communities — while learning how to report more deeply, deftly, and confidently with guidance and mentorship from STAT’s team of experienced editors and reporters. You will be edited by our equity editor, and have opportunities to attend training conferences and travel to do reporting. You will have the option of working remotely from within the U.S., or in our offices in Boston or Washington, D.C.

What You’ll Do

You’d write about a range of issues, from new treatments and technology that might benefit disabled people, to insurance and care gaps, state and federal policies affecting access to health care, and the experiences of patients with visible and invisible disabilities. We expect you to bring new perspectives to STAT’s coverage of health inequities, chronic disease, and health tech. You will be able to gain experience in writing, as well as in other journalistic formats, including events, newsletters, podcasts, photojournalism, and social media.

Who You Are

Our ideal candidates are journalists with less than five years of professional journalism experience, with a strong interest in covering disability issues, and with a personal connection to disability. Experience covering health and science is not necessary but would be beneficial.

Compensation + How to Apply

The salary for this position is $70,000. The fellow is eligible for health insurance and will receive 10 days of vacation and standard holidays off.

Interested in this job? If so, we’d love to hear from you. Please submit the following with your application:

  • A resume (please feel free to note which pronouns you use (For example - she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs, etc.).
  • A personal statement of up to 1,000 words describing yourself, your goals for the fellowship, and how your background, experiences, and career path influenced your decision to pursue this opportunity.
  • Links to 3-5 published articles that showcase your reporting and writing skills.

Applications are being accepted online until January 24, 2024 at 5 pm.

STAT is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. We strive to create a culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates all voices. A staff that reflects the world around us makes for better — and more accurate — journalism.
