Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) pharmacist will support the research mission of the health system by ensuring drug accountability and documentation, assist with build in the electronic medical record, adhere to all regulatory and Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements for clinical trials, and assist with budgeting of clinical trials or other administrative needs for pharmacy services.  The IDS pharmacist will represent the pharmacy department in interdisciplinary research collaboration, precept students and residents, oversee pharmacy technicians, and IDS pharmacy operations. The IDS pharmacist must have excellent communication skills and collaborates routinely with physicians, nurses, data analysts, and regulatory personnel in carrying out research activities. The IDS pharmacist also assist with regulatory and IDS best practice recommendations, and will complete off-campus research audits and participate in a rotating on-call pager for IDS pharmacy issues. 

The IDS pharmacy team ensures that all clinical trials with Investigational Drugs adhere to regulatory requirements, and participate on the IRB. The IDS pharmacy team will oversee all operations and clinical education to patients and providers. They support clinical trials activities with WFBH community hospitals, ambulatory clinics, Phase I oncology unit, and Infectious Disease clinical trial unit. Clinical trials is expanding significantly for the medical center. The ideal candidate will be adaptable and eager to be a part of this growing service line. The position interacts with external stakeholders and good communication is essential. This position will primarily be focused in oncology with some support for non-oncology clinical trials.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy is required.  
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice (PGY1) Residency, Specialty (PGY2) Residency, or equivalent work experience preferred in investigational or oncology pharmacy services.  
  • Experience with chemotherapy and/or IDS preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: 

  • Active Registration with North Carolina Board of Pharmacy required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Processes medication orders and prescriptions ordered by physicians or nurses for patients. 2. Supervises the work of technicians to ensure that correct medications are provided for patients on time, and support staff is fully utilized to meet area needs. 3. Provides pharmaceutical care to patients to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes. 4. Participates in the team approach to quality improvement to support the Pharmacy Department's commitment to the philosophy and principles of Total Quality. 5. Updates knowledge and skills of self and other health care professionals to maintain, improve and document competency. 6. Documents activities to provide information needed to meet standards, regulations, laws and/or other administrative requirements. 7. Participates in planning by establishing personal goals to support quality improvement efforts and contribute to the achievement of departmental objectives. 8. Provides age/developmental appropriate care in accordance with Age/Development Specific Guidelines for the age groups served when participating in patient care. 9. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Ability to communicate on a professional level with physicians, nurses and other professional staff when discussing drugs and drug related problems. 
  • Strong oral and written communication. 
  • Contact with patients, family members, visitors, coworkers and medical staff under a wide variety of circumstances. 
  • Excellent customer service skills. 
  • Must demonstrate a focus and understanding of patient medication needs across the various phases of care. 
  • Must possess a customer focus and demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care and ongoing learning and development. 
  • Should have good interpersonal, decision making, problem solving and supervisory skills. 
  • This individual must demonstrate a positive attitude, commitment to teamwork, attention to detail, and be flexible to provide services based on the daily needs of the Investigational Drug Service.

  • Requires judgment/action that could result in death of patients.
  • Noise generated from telephones, computers/printers, hood and verbal communication. 
  • Possible exposure to the risk of bloodborne and/or airborne pathogens. 
  • Subject to many interruptions. 
  • Pressure due to multiple demands. 
  • Subject to changes in work schedules and areas to meet customer/department needs.
