OVERVIEW
This position is responsible for successfully planning, leading and conducting external and internal organizing campaigns and other mobilization and leadership development activities involving members and future members. The Staff Organizer will achieve these goals through the creative and discretionary exercise of all responsibilities and activities outlined below. The Staff Organizer will develop and implement action plans, strategies and tactics for all campaigns, individually and as part of the organizing team.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
? Understands, maintains proficiency in, and develops greater expertise in all aspects of organizing non-union workers and conducting internal organizing campaigns. This includes pre-petition campaigns, card-check campaigns, election campaigns, first-contract campaigns, membership-recruitment campaigns in existing bargaining units, and other campaigns to recruit and mobilize activists from future and existing members.
? Participates in selection of employer targets for external and internal organizing campaigns; researches potential organizing targets; and collects and analyzes potential target data and information.
? Participates and/or leads in the formulation of an organizing plan for each targeted employer based on research, analysis and use of organizing expertise.
? Selects and recruits workers from unorganized employers to serve on organizing committees, orients and trains them in organizing goals and tactics, collaborates with them in determining organizing strategy, leads them and monitors their activities on behalf of the Union in organizing their co-workers and related planning and tasks.
? Selects, recruits, orients, trains, leads and monitors volunteer organizers from within the UNAC/UHCP membership for participation in external and internal organizing campaigns and other mobilization activities.
? Develops broad, representative organizing committees of worker-leaders; deploys committee to move the campaign.
? Conducts one-on-one and group-based organizing, assesses attitudes of individual workers and committees.
? Visits job sites to communicate with workers and implement all matters described herein.
? Visits workers in their homes to communicate the union message and implement all matters described herein.
? Writes leaflets and other materials for organizing campaigns and mobilization activities.
? Obtains and/or creates, maintains and updates employee lists and databases, including, but not limited to, the proficient use and manipulation of computerized database and other programs.
? Identifies employer violations of Federal or California law.
? Informs the Organizing Director of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings and other contacts.
? Recommends strategies, tactics and other actions to the Organizing Director or designee, and/or the UNAC/UHCP officers and executive staff.
? Exercises independent judgment and discretion in development and implementation of, and recommendations for, all missions and tasks described herein.
? Collaborates as needed or directed in all duties with other Staff Organizers, Staff Representatives and other employees, leaders and officers of UNAC/UHCP and the National and International unions.
? Reports to and takes direction and supervision from the Organizing Director or designee, and from UNAC/UHCP officers and executive staff. Reporting shall be verbal, electronic and in-person, as directed.
? Assists the National and International unions with organizing projects, with qualified volunteers considered first.
? Attends the biennial UNAC/UHCP convention.
? Attends UNAC/UHCP staff meetings.
? Performs related work as assigned/required by the Organizing Director.


DIRECTIONS AND DECISION-MAKING
This position reports to the Organizing Director, who is the direct supervisor. Works under the direction of the Organizing Director (or designee) and/or the UNAC/UHCP Officers. Keeps Organizing Director and/or designee regularly apprised of activities/tasks and developments during organizing campaigns.
