Position Description
Our Staff Engineer is a lead member of the engineering staff working across the organization to ensure that we provide a friction-less experience to our customers and maintain the highest standards of protection and availability. Our team thrives and succeeds in delivering high-quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. The ideal candidate has broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through back-end systems and all points in between.
The focus of this role will be to leverage advanced C programming skills to enhance and optimize PostgreSQL functionalities at GEICO. A key responsibility will involve crafting innovative solutions to augment PostgreSQL, address issues, and develop bespoke features that align with our enterprise objectives. The ideal candidate will be recognized as a subject matter authority in both PostgreSQL and C programming, possessing a depth of experience and expertise requisite for this pivotal role.
Position Responsibilities
As a Staff Engineer, you will:
  • Focus on multiple areas and provide leadership to the engineering teams
  • Own complete solution across its entire life cycle
  • Influence and build vision with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems for building enterprise class business applications
  • Own accountability for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions
  • Lead in design sessions and code reviews to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization
  • Utilize programming languages like C, Python, C# or other object-oriented languages, SQL, and NoSQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of Azure tools and services
  • Mentor more junior team members professionally to help them realize their full potential
  • Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
Qualifications
  • Strong proficiency in independent and efficient C programming
  • Fluency and specialization with at least two modern languages such as Java, Python or C# including object-oriented design
  • Experience building the architecture and design of new and current systems (architecture, design patterns, reliability, scaling, assessment, and proposals)
  • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
  • Fluency in DevOps Concepts, Cloud Architecture and Azure DevOps Operational Framework
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments
  • Experience in Datacenter structure, capabilities, and offerings, including the Azure platform and its native services
  • Experience in security protocols and products: understanding of Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML, OAuth
  • In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
  • Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)
  • Familiarity working with and contributing to PostgreSQL source code a plus
Experience
  • 6+ years of professional software development experience within C
  • 4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
  • 3+ years of experience with architecture and design
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience

Annual Salary
$82,000.00 - $261,500.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
